Adore is the the last album where you can hear Billy following his muse or whatever the fuck that he was doing back then to get to that level of creativity. And that's A LOT.

I was here for that. Those were wild times. Admittedly I have never been a big fan of that song, especially at first listen, but yeah the reaction was something.

That allmusic review is glowing. I feel like the people who are hearing it all at once for the first time are having more positive reactions than those of us who followed the podcasts.

I listened to the whole thing today, start to finish in one go, in decent earphones, whilst on a 10 mile walk through woodland trails. Open mind, unbiased.

Some honest observations:
  • The opening track (called Atum?) is cool and for a moment I thought I had misjudged this
  • It's much better when you listen to the whole thing in one go, rather than the painful song by song method we had to suffer through
  • I have no idea what the story is, except for numerous call backs to Zero, one reference to "Deus ex Machina", and Clementine being important (I assume)
  • The rock songs on the album are actually very well placed, as just when the clown fuckery or the quieter songs were getting tiresome, one of the rock songs would be there to bring back some energy
  • With the above point, Spellbinding is a good song, but only after having to suffer through Intergalactic and what seems like an eternity of ZERO SAVES ZERO
  • Katie is all over the record and she doesn't need to be, some of her parts are okay and with that it should definitely have been a "less is more" approach
  • Billy's vocals are way up front but in a full album sitting it isn't so bad, whereas song by song it sticks out like a sore thumb. Lyrics are unintelligible for a lot of it
  • We've said enough about the synths and many of them sound like a child plonking on the keys
  • One of the quieter songs somewhere in the middle really reminded me of TheFutureEmbrace and I appreciated that
  • Hooray is still stupid, doesn't fit, and is pointless
  • I don't know which Act I prefer as they all had good and bad moments
  • It's definitely much better than CYR
  • It is a SLOG to get through at 2 hours 20 minutes and I really doubt anyone will be doing it more than once or twice
  • Like many others I may pick out some songs to put on a various playlist, but the chances are it'll just be the "rock" ones as the clown fucks and quiet songs will just sound ridiculous out of context (as they did when we heard them)
  • I'm glad I gave it a fair crack, I enjoyed parts, but I was glad when it ended (and Of Wings is a terrible ender)

tl;dr it's better than you think, but that's it.

Someone on the fb group mentioned that the chorus of ‘Spellbinding’ is just ‘Keep On Rockin’ In the Free World’ and now I can’t un-hear it.

I knew it reminded me of something, but I thought it was just a generic chord structure familiarity. You're right, I think it was that.

I do have to say, Avalanche to Empires to Neophyte to Moss to Night Waves is just really nice transitionally. Each song works right to the next one.

I've listened to this thing in full like six times. It's way better than it appears from the release method. I think 15 year old me would love this record and feel like Christmas morning listening to it. I can see many of the absurdities of it now as an adult, but there's a chord of teenage angst and wonder that's being struck here that reminds me of why I loved the band to begin with.

I am all Atumed-out, and have no plans to listen start to finish currently. I didn't enjoy enough tracks to warrant that.

If there is ever a movie or visual component accompanied by the album, i will check that out. The music requires that type of buffer.

Haven’t revisited it yet. but there’s too much empty space here. So many of the songs reduce to dead air or single synth notes and then inexplicably restart.

Curtail the bullshit and a 2-disc or long 1-discer would have been improvement at least.

Exactly. Way too many songs that repeat the same formula with the sudden middle break, sparse acoustic for five seconds, song restarts with more clownsynth. There are about 15 too many songs on this album. A much stronger two disc or one disc album could have been made.

Like others have said, listening to the tracks all at once is a much better experience than a weekly track drop in low quality via the podcast. Quite a few songs I never gave the time of day to during the weekly podcasts turned out better in the context of the album.

I listened to the album in 24 bit and somehow miraculously became even worse. Maybe 24 bit is too good of quality and I should've just stuck with 16 bit to get the right experience.

You're not realistically going to hear a difference between 24 bit and 16 bit. The differences are beyond the threshold of hearing, really.

I listened in 8-bit on my old NES and it sounds a little bit better, but not much
