Agreed beguiled is catchy as F*ck. Simple riff but killer, lyrically it has some substance and vocally it is lower in the mix and it's not dry and there is a nice distortion effect on the verses. Chorus reminds me of 80's Motley Crue. Solid single, probably listened to it 200 times easily.

200 times in a few days? WHAT?

Not sure how you consider comparing SP to Motley Crue to be complimentary either

Official lyrics

So swallow hard the serpent
Of many tags and faces hid in masks
Coiled ‘round this lung until the last
He’ll crack your boots young pagans
‘Cause like you I was hatched to traipse on cold
And 17’s a long drawn way from hope

And I’ve learned these lessons I was taught
Taut, so taught
And now I’m telling you

Return the faith
Return the faith
They’re smashing out the veils
Return the faith
And there’s no escape
So return the faith
With charging light brigades
Return the faith
You’ve gotta move

So as betrayed by rainbows
Here I convey I’ve sold out your dear cause
And the king has placed us in his jaws
It’s sure no place can hold us
But in this scene I’m December
And your June’s wretch
And my idyls lay gasping as if death
And I’ve learned these lessons I was taught
Taut, so taught
And now I’m telling you
And I’ve learned these lessons I was taught
Taut, so taught
And now I’m telling you

Return the faith
Return the faith
They’re smashing out the veils
Return the faith
And there’s no escape
So return the faith
With charging light brigades
Return the faith
You’ve gotta move

Return the faith
Return the faith

After careful consideration of those arguments, it was concluded that the responsibility for this situation rests entirely with Smish Smash. He "beguiled" the BB public of this board, so to speak.

All right, Jack, watch yourself.

So he's speaking directly to fans, and trying to use insider code. Like a Donald Trump January 6 thing.

yeah that's what it looks like to me as well. assaulting the audience with a message he wants to drill into their heads on account of his brand, over and over and over with a simple repetitive beat the kids could understand

Beguiled up for the Roundtable on Steve Lamaq's BBC 6music show (basically musicians and industry figures review new releases)

Steve Lamaq: Quite a boring track to drum on.
Dave Rowntree, Blur: Pick the best 11, save it for the reissue.
Grove: Hahaha, sounds like WWE wrestling soundtrack... they have no idea about his wrestling business.
Emily Pilbeam: It's a skipper... i.e. would skip it.

Out of 10...
DR... 6/7 if youre a fan
Grove 4
Emily 4

is Netphoria the serpent in this hilarious scenario, or maybe we're the betraying rainbows?

Hmm...Betraying Rainbows. Not a bad band name.

And he doesn't sound like he's tripping over himself with the recent word salad style either. Nice.

I'm sure there will be a few where he does that though...

I love what they are trying to do with the whole narrative arc over 33 songs. Whether or not they succeed, i don't know - but I absolutely love that they are trying to do this.

There's stuff in these new tracks that hit the spot. Some stuff niggles, of course. But overall, I feel really lucky to be enjoying.

I understand it might not float everyone's boat, but some of the criticism / cynicism around some aspects of this from some here is baffling.

Honestly, if you are not hearing stuff in these 5 or 6 tracks or so that you dig, I just don't even know what you liked about them before, because, for me at least, the core components of what I used to find enjoyable about these guys seems present and correct, to greater and lesser degrees across each track.

I would, like anyone, like to have my socks completely knocked off and i'm absolutely not there yet... But we can live in hope. At least for another few months!

Agree with the above, and really looking forward to hearing the first 11. From memory there are a couple of longer songs on the record too; what was the last epic? Oceania? Pah!

Of the SOUND of the band (away from the songs) 50% of what I liked about the Pumpkins was the vocals. The soft feminine sound sitting in the stew of noise. 40% was the guitars. 10% the drums.

That's specific to Siamese Dream (and Gish to a point). MCIS moved in different directions, which was fine and Adore was a whole other thing but vocally stands up. Machina is where all those percentages slipped a fair bit.

I firmly believe that if Billy used his 91 - 00 voice on everything after Zwan, they would 100% more listenable.

I think, regrettably, that voice is a bit gone.

Beguiled charted #26 on US Mainstream Rock
It's in the top 30 for Alternative Airplay and Rock Airplay

it's not a smash hit, but people are listening to it.

we've heard it, tho...

he's been pulling it out live, and in that stabs the empty cock song i cant remember the name where everyone was like woah he's Still Got It

the vocals on the records are so bizarre, one wonders if he can hear it, maybe his ears are so shot he can't hear the frequenceis his own voice makes real well? so he cranks it? at some point it would be really nice to have this answered, just need an interviewer with sufficiently heaving beavescrote to ask, "so your vocals have moved in a very different, very ahem interesting direction? but still so amazing? but can u talk about that as an artistic choice or..."

people who aren't us don't care about the mix or how much worse his voice is [they already hated it]

During lockdown, in one of his live streams, he showed us this particular mic saying it was the one he used to record most of his vocals during SD and that was why he sounded the way he sounded on that album. Then he added "great mic. not that I want to sound like that again". So it's his decision. He likes his voice up in mix.
