my brother in christ what about the soul, about conscience, what about the magic of imagination, of dream-land? this sorcery derives not only from our brains.

basically my line is always that the US doesn't have a depression problem it has a religion problem. and by that i dont mean "people have lost christ," i mean that secularism has wrecked a lot of the social and psychological functions of religion without replacing them with anything.

obviously some individuals have a depression problem and if SSRIs help they should be available etc etc. but i think we should address the mental health crisis with social interventions before pharmacological ones. just adding a pill without fixing the conditions fucking people up does not work/is not working.

that's a lot of new-age nonsense. no amount of spiritualism will make your brain produce the correct balance of chemicals if you just have a disorder. that's literally like trying to pray away a heart murmur

and the idea that people had less mental illness before the field of mental health was defined because of religion is laughable. that's about 1 step from "everyone is gay now because of the media"

I would think it depends, which is why it's a question between an individual and their doctor

Also I'm pretty sure that the most up-to-date studies have generally found SSRIs to be more likely to produce a clinical response than placebos. That's an old talking point.

But for real, meditation has been found to be equally as effective as drugs. That one is true.

This is a good, succinct read on where SSRI research stands now
