The two new movies are good. The 3rd film will be interesting.

These are so much better than the Lynch film. But i miss the weird details that were skipped to fit the story onto film.

I wish the films had a bit more of the history of the Dune universe. As well as a bit more exposition somehow regarding what exactly Paul is seeing via prescience. There is no mention of the past Butlerian Jihad. Villeneuve never uses the word "Jihad," which is a huge part of the books. He subs the word crusade at one point and Holy War at the very end.

The Dune books are a dismantling of determinism. I don't think Villeneuve will ever delve into this.

I loved the David Lynch film from the beginning. Even though it butchers the story. Lynch makes Dune weird. The books are much stranger than Villeneuve's films. Lynch at least left in the fact that the guild navigators are mutants that swim in liquid, and Mentats are addicted to spice.

True. Definitely overwhelming. Went to a 1.9 Imax on Friday. I may go watch it in the larger format 1.4 Imax the second time.

i liked books 3, 4, and 5 the most but don't think they'll ever make films of those. and book 2 (to be film 3) was my least favorite. looking forward to checking out the new film

Something I wondered about, after watching the first one (haven't seen the second yet): Are all these folks human (as in, these are our descendants far in the future), or "human" (like in Star Wars where the human-looking people have no connection to Earth/us)?

I remember looking this up after watching, and not finding a clear answer, though that's likely on me.

they are human. The story is 12,000 years in the future. 10,000 years after the Butlerian Jihad, which was a Battlestar Galactica style war of humans against AI. Which is why there are no droids in Dune.

Earth is only mentioned as part of ancient history. I'm not sure whether it was destroyed or lost somehow. But humans live throughout the galaxy.

In the 3rd film (second book) Paul's army murders 61 billion people and sterilizes 90 planets in their quest to "bring them to paradise"

Should be a great movie!

Thanks! I knew about the Jihad, just from being in lots of general sci-fi discussions, but I was never clear on the Earth stuff.
