I really didn’t like this song live along with Empires. Studio versions haven’t really swayed me either.

no insult to you in particular.. but i'm starting to understand why people thought mike byrne was a good drummer. they all like the flashy shit and overlook groove.. which he had none.

jimmy is 100% jimmy here, groove in only the way jimmy know how. "any studio drummer" my ass.

Ok but the verse is totally chopped up and quantized. There’s no Jimmy feel there at all until the chorus.

Edit: wrong song, thought this was the spellbinding thread, whoops

yeah, even when he plays acoustic it's all processed. such a shame

1000% of bands sound better playing live in a room together than production-manipulated into a certain product

I'm glad we are not throwing insults about personal taste.
I'm not saying he isn't recognisable
I'm not saying it isn't good.
I'm not saying he sounds like a drum machine
I'm not saying I want technical bombast all the time
I am just saying (and I appreciate the reasons he has made particular choices for different songs) that I personally, would have liked some of the songs to have a little more variety in certain aspects.

It's not some damming critique, or god forbid praise of the tastelessness of Mike, it's just -i feel- some of the tracks could have been more distinctive, in parts.

No synths but this isn’t anything remotely like The Smashing Pumpkins back in the day. Hate this wresslin’ brah guitar chug sound he’s doing.

YOU GOTTA LET ME LIVE

YOU GOTTA LET ME DIE ALONE AND LOW

YOU GOTTA SET THIS RIGHT

YOU GOTTA LIGHT THIS ARK FOR FLIGHT, LET’S GO

I WASN’T MADE FOR THRIFT

I WASN’T MADE FOR GRIME

THEY SAY YOU CAN RESIST

AS IF THESE ARE MY TIMES

SAY NEVERMIND, LET’S GO

BETTER ANGELS

FEATHER SOULS AND FOLD

TAKE ME WHERE THE WIND BLOWS

LIFT ME HIGHER, WON’T YOU TAKE HOLD

NOTHING FOR THE SAKE OF ZEROES

IF I SHOULD CHANCE RETRACE

IF I’D A MIND TO ROCK AWAY THE STONE

WHAT I NOW KNOW IS LIE

WHEN I NOW KNOW WAS RITE, AS OPPOSED WITH THINE

‘CAUSE WHAT IS MINE A’INT GRIFT

AND WHAT IS YOURS A’INT BRIGHT

THEY PLEAD YOU CAN RESIST

AS IF THESE ARE MY TIMES

OH, NEVERMIND, LET’S GO

BETTER ANGELS

FEATHER SOULS AND FOLD

TAKE ME WHERE THE WIND BLOWS

LIFT ME HIGHER, WON’T YOU TAKE HOLD

NOTHING FOR THE SAKE OF ZEROES

IN LIEU OF FAILURE

IN LIEU OF STANDING STILL

FOR STILL WE DIE

IN LIEU OF SOLAR SHIPS

IN LIEU OF HEAVEN’S MIGHT

TO CROSS THESE SKIES

HERE WE GO

HERE WE GO

BETTER ANGELS

FEATHER SOULS AND FOLD

TAKE ME WHERE THE WIND BLOWS

LIFT ME HIGHER, WON’T YOU TAKE HOLD

NOTHING FOR THE SAKE OF ZEROES

TAKE ME WHERE THE WIND BLOWS

First ATUM track besides the title track that I enjoyed. His vocals still suck ass, and the song still sounds like it was recorded in a cold laboratory, but it actually is not bad.

Also, Jimmy is clearly just here to cash in a check. That was the most give-up drumming I’ve heard in a while. The Meg White school of drumming only works if you’re doing garage rock. 2.5/5. Every other song is a 0/5 tho, so.

It doesn't work that well in that context either. Meg was there for the partners in crime shtick, to make him look a bit less the creepy child molester he totally looked like at the beginning, etc...

Jimmy in his original run of the band- really drags the swing of his 16th notes in a drastic way,,, the “push pull”…. Drum sounds are incredibly dark and intensity of the hit isn’t the focus unlike his contemporaries at the time

Jimmy in machina era thru zeitgeist- much snappier 16th note swing but paired with more highly energetic drumming and flashier fills that have come to be iconic for the chamberlain sound, still retains the dark jazzy tone just more intense

Jimmy 2015 to present- occasionally whips out his old ways when performing jazz and only jazz… almost no signature swung 16th notes when playing with pumpkins, very straight and metronomic… tone is completely different to ever before, favoring bright unnatural sounds that are often even mistaken for e drums

Why sure! Here’s a few—

Harmageddon- anytime he comes back in on harmageddon, he drags out the first beat of the measure, much like he does everywhere else in his recorded career. Same with steps in time, good in goodbye, ATUM, hooligan, beyond the vale, gold mask, empires, culling, etc etc.

Use your damn ears it’s all there.
