great interview. It seems as if the band truly enjoys playing together. I think that as long as Billy's control over the music and the direction of the band remains unaltered or unquestioned, the band will remain stable. Currently, these musicians are strong. Time will tell.

Teargarden is an ongoing project that Billy has committed to completing with 44 songs. So as far as I know anything we release before those 44 songs are complete will be included under the Teargarden umbrella. Oceania is considered part of the Teargarden project, so presumably the next record will be too.

"The album will feature 44 songs, 4 of which are now being recorded. My desire is to release a song at a time beginning around Halloween of this year, with each new release coming shortly after until all 44 are out. Each song will be made available absolutely for free, to anyone anywhere. There will be no strings attached."

i don't think it was meant that way, but this part is kind of a dig at d'arcy:

"And the fact that I am the only bass player to have created and played all of my own parts on an SP record says a lot. "

If she didn't mean it that way, she wouldn't have brought it up, would she.

she has nothing against any of the previous bass players. And she has huge respect for D'arcy. Nicole doesn't diss anybody in public. She's not like that.

All she knows about the inner workings of the original band comes from billy.

IMO she's the glue that holds this new band together. without her you have Billy in a studio with Mike making TBK. With her you have billy making good music again. My impression is that the sound of many of the newer songs would be completely different if she wasn't there. Not just the bass lines, but the direction the band would take between Billy's initial riffs the demos and the final recordings. She has a bigger influence on what the band sounds like today than Jeff or Mike does.

I think the reason for that is hinted at in the interview. Nicole's the second most experienced musician in the band. She worked for 10 years in a bunch of different bands. Unlike Mike, who's barely out of high school. Or Jeff, who's either been in Grad School or playing gigs with cover bands on the west coast prior to SP.

Nicole is a legitimate bass player.
not a guitar player on bass
All the SP1 albums have songs that I could easily point out as bass doubling the guitar. to me this is billy's doing. and it's shitty bass playing.
the Oceania songs don't have any of that. the bass is really it's own voice moving in its own way juxtaposing the guitars. and that comes from a real bass player that refuses to double the guitars.

I'm not saying that D'arcy never came up with bass lines, but there's obvious places where billy stepped in and probably restricted her opportunity.
since we're listening to MCIS bonus reissue tracks, listen to By Starlight (flood rough) - the bass in that song voices the chords in a really special way. super classy.
