Vasily
There's been a lot of posting about SP on IG from Vasily Kafanov lately. When asked on DM he's either responded with a "no" or a cryptic response. Do you think there's a chance he's working on the reissue art now that Linda's has been scrapped?
We wanted to believe. We wanted to call out. On August 20 and September 5, 1977, two spacecraft were launched from the Kennedy Space Flight Center Florida. They were called Voyager. Each one carries a message. A gold-plated record projecting images, music and sounds of our planet. Arranged so that it may be understood if ever intercepted by a technologically-mature extraterrestrial civilization. Thirteen years after its launch, Voyager One passed the orbital plane of Neptune and essentially left our solar system. Within that time, there were no further messages sent. Nor are any planned. We wanted to listen. On October 12, 1992, NASA initiated the high resolution microwave survey. A decade-long search by radio telescope scanning ten million frequencies for any transmission by extraterrestrial intelligence. Less than one year later, first term Nevada senator Richard Bryan successfully championed an amendment which terminated the project. I wanted to believe. But the tools had been taken away. The X-Files had been shut down. They closed our eyes. Our voices have been silenced. Our ears now deaf to the realms of extreme possibilities. |

I asked him and my boy didn’t respond. You’ll be pleased to know that I didn’t take it personally.

I was hoping 'Vasily' was a new undiscovered gem from the MCIS era

Finally agree on something.
I can’t believe how far superior machina 2’s music and artwork is.. I remember thinking in 2000 machina 1 was a joke album as a fuck you to the label and machina 2 was purposely the better album for the diehards. Obviously that was wrong and I’ve grown to like machina 1, but it’s still the weakest imo. |

His site has some pretty bad examples of artwork on it. Apparently the band mewithoutyou were so impressed with what he did with machina that they thought 'yeah lets have some of that' |

of all of the art for the album, that album cover is the worst. i'd argue that probably helped them lose some sales

Machina II does work better as an album in terms of "flow" & all that, but Machina I at least wasn't robbed of too many highlights
still may have been a bit of a fuck you all things considered tho |

if i'm gonna have an alternate Machina cover it's gonna have nothing to do with Vasily - I like the original cover and love the accompanying art, but back when I only had Machina as a burnt CD-R (that's right) I would essentially just picture a still from the TEG video as the cover and tbh it brought out a side of the album to me i like more than the "ancient lore" or whatever they were going for, which honestly doesn't even make sense with the supposed story to me, wasn't this supposed to be some "future band" comedy version of the real band backed up even further by the whole cartoon thing?
tldr i like black & lime green |

Machina 2 artwork was best. Just reuse this in foil.

Not sure we ever knew that Linda was for sure-for sure doing the Machina reissue stuff, but I'm glad we know she's no longer involved at this point. There's been no talk of a reissue release in quite some time, so maybe some more time between now and then will allow them to get Kasanov back on board and avoid something like this tomfoolery. I mean, look at that... artwork itself is rough, then you schlack that Siamese Lansbury font on there but make sure to stretch and distort it so the aspect is all off... ugh. It's rough.
Hell, I don't even need NEW Vasily stuff. Even just re-imagined stuff like the other reissues would do the trick. The original artwork was awesome: that 2000 vinyl pressing's artwork is really something great. I'm way into everything from that era - album itself, the HMM promo tape, those cool radio promo cds, the SIYL and Try singles... all of it is a great cohesive thing that is just as detailed and mysterious and bloated (in a good way, mostly) as the album is. It just works well. I can't - and really don't wanna - imagine Machina without his stuff. |

Machina was a little over 10 yrs old when this reissue "campaign" first started, now it's over 20
fortunately for us as hardcore devotees of Bald Mormonism, we don't actually age until the thing is released, so however old you all were in 2011, that is also your age now. congratulations everyone I was also excited when I heard the news! |

I think I was listening to the Lehrer interview and BC said something like (in regards to artwork) "I could just pick up a Taschen book" and it reminded me of the Taschen book of alchemical woodcuts that was popular but it was definitely post-2000.
I'm too lazy to dig my copy out to check. Machina era + artwork decoding was fun. Everyone who says it wasn't fun was either not there or is wrong. |

I could've cared less about decoding art or Billy’s concept. I just wanted a decent album. Machina was okay. I find a lot of the stronger material was on Machina II.
