Default KEEP CALM AND STUDY ON: NETPHORIANS IN COLLEGE - WORLD TOUR 2016/2017

I dunno the title is just a joke I'm not on a world tour just in hot as fuck south florida.

So I know ****** and I are in school... who else???

Mine started this week, on Tuesday. It seems like Tues/Thurs will be very intellectual days focusing on clinical stuff (abnormal and clinical psych) and Wed/Fri will be more interactive and creative (Honors Seminar and Cognition) class. I'm cool with that. Cognition is assignment heavy, but my two clinical classes are midterm/final only, and my HS we just read and present chapters from books and have a term paper. The rest of the time we learn about how to do academic research (like, the kind of research faculty is doing and how we can get involved) and get to see high level presentations by faculty. Pretty sweet. It also only has 11 people in the class. We sit at a big table. It's basically introduction to grad school.

Plus I'm going to be a research assistant, directed independent study, in a close relationships lab. Doing behavioral coding and administering testing protocol and such. Cool things.

Who else is in school? Tell me about what you're studying, how far along you are, and your career goals. Bueller?

After this semester I'll have 94 credits, firmly in senior territory. But that would leave me graduating on an off semester, which is probably not the best plan. I'm going to end up getting more involved in something - either internship, or some honors society stuff. I need to stay full time so I'm just going to end up with more than 120 credits, which is fine. I'll also end up taking next summer off completely, or more likely just working on honors thesis but not earning any credits. But I just didn't plan it too great. Probably need to set up a counseling meeting to sort it all out.

After this semester I have to take 1) research methods 2) honors special topics and 3) honors thesis, and then for the remaining 17+ credits I can basically take whatever the fuck I want! I definitely want to squeeze in some stuff to make me more well-rounded, like African American history and some sociology stuff, plus there's 3 or 4 psych electives I still want to take (psychopharm, psych and the law, developmental psychobiology, human perception). Alternatively, I could say fuck doing an honors thesis and only have to take research methods and then whatever else I want. But lol who am I kidding #overachiever #4.0gpa #yeahthatsrightbitch #waitingformybubbletoburst

oh I also made a friend. we have both honors seminar and cognition together. she is a neuroscience major, wicked smart. from colombia. already a teaching assistant in chemistry, as an undergraduate. i found her a pdf copy of one of her textbooks using nefarious means and now i believe she is in love with me. but ya she's pretty dope, it'll be nice to have an ally. it's funny, it's a developmental psych book for her human development class, which happens to be written by the professor of our honors seminar class, who is a developmental-evolutionary psychologist and very well respected in the field. so i just kinda stole from him though, prob shouldn't mention my textbook pirating skills around him...

I'm technically full time, but I'm taking 18 rather than 24 points - should be 3 units rather than four, but this semester it's 2 units, because one is worth double points.

One unit is lit crit, and one is purely creative. I'm in a world of pain right now.

I've made a few friends though. It's funny being 36 and back at uni. Because it's postgrad most people are working full time - all the classes are in the evening.

I wish I was at a 4.0 GPA. I'm close - our equivalent is a "High Distinction Weighted Average Mark", known as an "HD WAM" (WAM is pronounced as a word, so it's HD wham). You need a grade average of 85% or more, across all your papers, and I'm on 82.5%. Hoping to drag it up and over the HD mark by the end of next year, when I finish.

But yeah. Probably not. Argh

You'll do it. I'll prob end up with less than a 4.0. I just have to get one A- and it'll be gone. That's exceedingly likely, especially in classes like Cognition where a 92 is an A-. It's not even the hard classes that usually worry me, just the ones with perfectionist professors who do the high A-. A lot of profs do A from 90-100 and then A- from like 87-89, but not these douchebags. Actually they're not douchebags, probably just former 4.0 students themselves.

People do get impressed when they hear it and I'll admit I do drop it as a humblebrag sometimes. But in the end, it'll get me 3 greek words on my diploma and some extra cords to wear around my neck and possibly later hang myself with.

Yeah that is high...85% for an A+ seems low, I agree. They seem just as hard to earn, though. In arts, at my uni, any grade over 90% signifies material that either wholly or in part, is considered publishable.

My highest mark is 88%, and obviously wanting to be a working writer, I want to come in at 90 something % every time. But, not yet.

Well, I think because your degree is all writing, it's a bit hard to match up to mine, which is about... 30% or so writing. Most classes have little or no writing, but the ones that do tend to require a lot of it. The term paper I wrote last semester was graded at 95% but I'm sure it was sub-threshold for publishing, if only because I'm not advanced enough in my studies to confidently critique cited publications.

I start my next semester next month.

Kind of apprehensive about it. I usually look forward to the school year during the summer, but not this year. I'm doing an honours degree and have an honours seminar next semester in which we are expected to read a book a week, and I'm a slow reader. They are seminal texts in political science, and since the reading list was given to us early, I told myself I'd get a head start over the summer. Summer's almost over, and I am yet to read a single book on the list. I tried starting with Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France early in the summer because it's pretty short, but it was just so dry and boring that I could never bring myself to finish it.

I don't know if I even like my major all that much. When I try to think about my favourite past courses, none of them have been in my major. They've all been electives. Political science courses have pretty much always been the ones that I've just felt like I have to take. But I'm already near the end of my degree, so I'm like, welp, may as well finish it. And I have a high enough GPA to enroll in the honours programme, so my ego won't let me not pursue it.

But I also feel like I don't really deserve my GPA, because the past couple years, I've handed in a lot of assignments absurdly late and have had trouble with deadlines. Pretty much the only reason I still ended up getting good marks is that I've had really charitable professors who are nicer to me than I deserve because they like my work (when I finally hand it in) and I contribute in class. Thing is, writing well and being active in class doesn't excuse habitually missing deadlines, but none of these profs are privy to the fact that I've made this a habit. I used to never miss deadlines, but the past two years, I don't know what happened, but my procrastination and writers' block have just gotten really bad. I feel like that will most likely continue into the coming year, which will be disastrous, seeing as I will be doing my honours' thesis.

On top of that, I kinda just want to be done with my undergrad now, especially because I moved back in with my parents, who say they don't want me to live on my own until I've finished my degree. But with the way my schedule is, I'll have to take an additional year to finish, because I don't have all my honours requirements or enough credits for my minor. I have to do 2 credits in languages to get my honours, and I haven't done language courses since French stopped being mandatory in middle school. And I hated French class. I've never really enjoyed learning languages.

So, pretty much, school will be a nightmare and I will just crash and burn.

I dunno, I wouldn't worry about the deadlines. Professors almost always would rather read a late but interesting essay than an on-time, boring essay. And 18-25 is a hard and shitty time for many, many people.

It's nice to have someone who is interested enough in the subject to take the time to write a good paper other than just turn in a shitty c-grade paper on time, which is what a lot of people do. People who don't meet deadlines are often perfectionists.

All of my work was late, last semester. Two of my professors were late in returning their grades. It's just life.

Don't worry too much about the reading either, and about the grass being greener in other disciplines. These days, you can change direction in a masters course later on.

I'm sorry if this sounds dismissive...I feel for you. And I said many similar things at your age - about not deserving the grades, etc. I just also have a headache right now.

I think there's truth to that, but I think a lot of professors would rather have a student that works efficiently and can manage their time well and meet deadlines, than one who turns things in as late as I did. I'm not talking about one- or two-day lates. Some of these papers would be a week or two late. Like, I'm surprised that they didn't just give me a zero, because they would be totally justified in doing that.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if I'm going to continue my discipline for my master's degree, or just continue with what I'm doing. Not yet sure what programmes let you into the master's programme without a bachelor's.

I don't want to do another 4-5 years of undergrad and just want to get a post-grad degree right away, so I may end up doing my master's in political science, and then doing another bachelor's in a different field after that. I dunno.
