Remember when the U.S. and Iran had a deal that Iran could develop nuclear energy to meet its energy needs and would allow independent inspectors to come in and make sure they weren't making weapons? When there was movement between normalization between the two countries?

yeah as I recall the timeline goes Iran wants nuclear, the West freaks out and threatens war for a decade, then Obama's government comes to the table and works out a deal with Iran and the whole world breathes a sigh of relief except for the right wing because HOW CAN U NEGOTIATE WIT ROGUE STATE U COMMIE TRAITOR?!?! Trump comes in, rips up the agreement giving Iran no further incentive to not build a bomb, blurts verbal diarrhea during the campaign about how he's the peace candidate and none of this shit would be happening if he was pres, then he becomes pres and bombs Iran.

Like. I'm sorry there is no amount of mental gymnastics that makes this make sense. The people who have always wanted to bomb Iran are now bombing Iran because they think it will make them stronger personally

Bush wanted to hit Iran after Iraq. His administration just never got around to it before the end of his term. Certain political forces in the U.S. have wanted this forever. Might have something to do with the fact that Israel does not want eased tensions between one of its main opponents and its closest ally.

Seems to me like it's a small number of rich donors who enforce the pro-Israel thing rather than the majority of voters. Don't get me wrong, most voters are more pro-Israel than pro-Palestine, but they don't care enough about the conflict for it to be their election issue. They're not voting on it.

The folks who are voting on it and punishing any candidate who isn't sufficiently supportive of Israel are a powerful, rich minority.

older Americans have more of a cultural attachment/feeling of investment in Israel's future, one because they were born closer to the Holocaust but two because they lived through several major conflicts in which Israel was not a direct aggressor but was defending itself against very openly stated attempts to destroy it. I think for boomer liberals, that sentiment might be there that they would withhold a vote if the Democrat is not seen as an ally of Israel.

I can confirm that my only problem with reliving everything about the invasion of Iraq in a slightly different location, along with reports that Trump primarily did it because he saw on Fox News how much praise Israel is getting for attacking Iran and wanted some for himself, is my frothing hatred for the state of Israel
