too true. and yet Netanyahu remains widely unpopular (though it has swung up since Iran last I checked).

I think it's pretty fair to say most Americans are also just normal people trying to live life, despite the fact that Trump has been repeatedly elected. Trump and his policies are also really unpopular even though people voted for it.

I don't think so, but for some reason it still needs to be said that Israelis are not inherently bad because of where they were born. Pissed about the bill passing, obviously. To the point that it feels out of body to be taking my kids to 4th of July carnivals and fireworks where there are inflatable Trumps and waving flags alongside all the spectacular activities. But also, they're too young for me to burden them with anything more than just enjoying the foam pits and dunk tanks, so I'm just compartmentalizing it this year.

people live in information bubbles. a very large portion of Trump voters hear virtually no critical information about him. If you get much of your daily news from your local TV station (which most older people still do) and it's owned by Sinclair, you will see ONLY positive news about the Trump regime, and everything any democrat does in DC or locally will be depicted as terrible and dangerous. Same on Fox News, OAN. If you are already seeing that "news" and you're on social media your feed has been tailored to be pro Trump and anti everything else.

If you got all your news in the last election cycle from Univision... it was all pro Trump and anti Biden. Latino voters who shocked that Trump is sending browshirts to raid their homes and send their family members to prisons in el Salvador are shocked because they were told he supported them and just wanted to get rid of "the criminals."

A lot of people are amazingly stupid. But a lot of just trying to live their lives and have no idea how they're being manipulated by news, tech, and social media.

They are in the 1939 stage of public support for war and genocide. Few Israeli Jews are going to turn completely against their government in the middle of a literal war when Iran, Lebanon, etc are bombing them.

The problem is that everyone wants to feel smart without putting in the work. You can't call bad ideas stupid anymore without being accused of elitism. Ironically, it’s the right that’s obsessed with validating every half-baked opinion. They’ve turned “everyone’s perspective is valid” into their own participation trophy.

I miss the fedora brigade. Those cringe but necessary neckbeards from the '00s who had no shame in saying, “WRONG. Actually…” when someone said something dumb. Sure, they lived on chicken nuggets and Reddit atheism, but at least they pushed back on nonsense instead of politely nodding along.

I’m venting, obviously. I know condescension doesn’t change minds. The research is clear: people double down when they feel attacked. So in real life, I keep it polite; I nod, find common ground, and go "oh yeah, your values make sense to me, you want to be rewarded for your hard work so your children can have a good life" before gently giving them a perspective on how policies I favour might lead to that for them, not expecting them to be won over by a single conversation, but hoping they leave it going "that guy was all right," with that conversation becoming just one brick of many that will open their minds. Still, part of me wishes we could just openly mock bad ideas again. That urge to dunk and sneer never really dies. In a perfect world, everybody could dunk on each other and the stupid ideas would be dunked out of the savage free-for-all.
