and that verse too about the trash in the street and the puddles of piss in the unemployment line . “all of that filthy empathy for the way we’re feeling”

that’s fucking incredible, love that line

small side note, two gallants were on connor oberst’s record label for a little while. since this is a two gallands board, i thought i’d bring that up.

but back on topic, arc of time is lovely too. when the guitar lick comes in, sounds real fresh

speaking of cassadaga, have you ever heard the cover of four winds done by the killers? it’s really nice i think. it’s on spotify. now, it wasn’t a years or two ago when i last checked before this

edit: just listened. it’s ok, not amazing. i guess i just like hearing it in another context, that’s exciting to some degree

related note, there is only so much bright eyes i can listen to over the course of a few days, then it becomes too much. but after a long hiatus... it really hits the spot

i bought them on the same day, too, and wide awake definitely hit quicker, but over time digital ash hits harder for me

I had to write a term paper for english 2 in college a few years ago and in the class we had read some James Joyce poem, so he was on my radar. I was aware two gallants was a short story by JJ and I ended up writing a paper about it. always wanted to tell you about this, thought you'd appreciate it. good story, too. i turned it into a psych paper because lol @ lit papers at community college

just pmed you a link. god, 2015 feels like so long ago.

the story is good but i think you can read the analysis without the story and it still makes a lot of sense

why read the story when you can listen to the band?

a song is worth a thousand words, but only if there are that many words in the song

I heard this for the first time this past year. Didn't like the other b-side on the single so much but I enjoyed this one

How did I miss this thread!

I got it on vinyl after having mostly forgotten about it and instantly reconnected. Light Pollution is probably my favorite. Proceeded to pick up lifted not long after and I love it more than I remember loving it in high school. Weird!

Man, Lifted is such a solid album. Fuuuuck

But my fave BE tunes are a few non-album things he did - Blue Angels Air Show, Bad Blood, A Perfect Sonnet. Insanely good songs that still more than hold up for me.

One foot in front of the other was perfect and then he ruined it and put it on I’m wide awake, which I never got into

i didn't hear one foot until way after i learned the wide awake version, so to me it just sounds like an alternate version. i'm so used to hearing emmylou's voice on it ahah

I don't understand what people have against Landlocked Blues. It's one of my favorite Bright Eyes songs and I think I like pretty much everything about it better than One Foot in Front of the Other

The little interlude after the "we're coming for you" part gives me that frisson just about every time

Also, you should all listen to Better Oblivion Community Center if you haven't done so already. I lost interest in Conor Oberst for a long time but I like this record a whole lot

I just relistened to landlocked blues to double check and yes I very much prefer one foot in front of the other. It’s a little twee and overcomplicated but that’s what I want from bright eyes you know
