![]() Is it fair to say that the Smashing Pumpkins are the Beatles of their generation and Radiohead are the Pink Floyd of their generation?

![]() I think the Smashing Pumpkins are better as a rock band. Radiohead are more interesting as an electronic group.

![]() SP fucked up their mainstream potential after MCIS. I don't think they cared though, and if we're talking from an artistic perspective, it was for the better

![]() The Beatles had two incredible song writers and were collectively a better group of musicians that the Smashing Pumpkins. SP are hands down my favorite band, and I think Billy is a better song writer than that Lennon/McCartney guy who wrote all the Beatles' songs, but I think objectively you can't really put SP at the level of the Beatles.

![]() Its fair to say RH s the PInk Floyd of our gen. But SP is its own animal, analogous with no band before it. I guess you could say SP is an amalgam of all rock bands from the mid-60s to 80s

![]() Aside from being influenced by the Beatles (like pretty much everything to come after them) SP is not like them at all. Radiohead might be a little more like Pink Floyd because they are the weird experimental band that managed to be immensely popular anyway, but ultimately they aren't that similar either. Bad analogy.
Ultimately there is no band from generation x that comes close to matching the cultural power and musical influence/creativity of The Beatles. Nirvana comes closest because they got so big so fast and shaped the aesthetic of the early 90s in a lot of ways. |

![]() We can't just transpose the bands into other bands to do a shitty comparison. The only truth is that 1979 is the best song of the 90s.

![]() when you look at their impact and what they did for rock, I don't think you can find a bad more analogous to nirvana. I'm not saying they're equals or even similar

![]() I'm talking more along the lines of cultural impact and how rock was shaped for the next decade. Soundgarden came close I guess, they were pretty big but IMO not quite that big.

![]() this is anecdotal, but I lived through the grunge thing. I'd say nirvana was the biggest thing, pearl jam second, with SP and s.garden probably about equal until MCIS rolled around
