Great thread. A lot of excellent picks from everyone.

I forgot a few pivotal singers:

Layne Staley: I think he's the most powerful singer from the 90's and any of those grunge bands. Cornells technically proficient but he doesn't emit the raw energy that Staley does

Brian Wilson: Just the ultimate pop singer and it still sounds fantastic today. The melodies are still so infectious. I think he and his bandmates are the real "king of pop"

Pat Benatar: Just personally love her tones and the whole aesthetics of her voice

Sting: just fucking groundbreaking for his time. Timeless songs, timeless vocals. Just a fantastic singer

it's possible no ones mention the greatest singing voice of all...
her voice so pure, you don't feel ashamed listening to her elevator music:

Karen Carpenter

If I'd have done a comprehensive list/remembered all my favourites, there are three I would've added from your list, namely Jeff Buckley, Amy Winehouse, and Isaac Brock.

Also, I forgot about Elvis Presley till I saw him in someone's list.

edit - Björk too

what's with the kids born in the 90s loving the 90s more than teenagers in the 90s

what's up with that

i guess it's like how there were a bunch of people my age that got into the 80s all super hard then tried to claim it
