Seeing them all laid out like this at least reassures me that there is one incredible song on every album at a minimum.

Some good picks in there, and your "new era" SP tracks mirror mine for the most part. Just gotta wonder how you like the studio version of "United States". To me, that was one of the biggest let downs of the Zeitgeist era after hearing it live for a month ahead of time.

Are there any pre-album-release versions of United States considered particularly good? I'm sure I could do the math on when the album came out, find a show before then, etc., but if anyone has a show that comes immediately to mind, let me know pls

I don't know if I've ever listened to a live version of it, whether it was played before or after the album release

not sure how much better they could have done US on the album, this was pre-drum-neutering era and the 2 things that essentially drive the song (rhythm gtrs & drums) are in full force

As you can infer by that ranking I still think Beautiful is a brilliant song - it’s just I couldn’t in my right mind pick one I like less. Not even Take Me Down, which alongside Go is Iha’s finest work with SP.

But yeah I’ve been listening to it for years and years I know it’s great don’t you worry my man.

"muzzle" is my least favorite song on mellon collie. "take me down" is my proper favorite but it feels weird discussing iha songs amongst billy songs to me unless its a co-write.

Beautiful on MCIS is great. Those deeper cuts like that and Lily and By Starlight are what makes the album so great. The revisionist hate on classic SP stuff here lately is lame.

They played it at the first show back in Paris (May 2007) and, I believe, played it at every show up to the release of Zeitgeist (July 2007).

The studio version lacks that unhinged energy that the live performances had. Obviously, Jimmy's drums on the track sound amazing, but the guitars sound so sterile and the vocal sounds like a scratch vocal. Also, that weird robot slowed-down Billy voice thing it does right before the breakdown is one of their worst moments ever recorded. Every time I've seen that song live, it has been one of the highlights of the show. The studio version just seems to drag on and on.
