I think Ram is often pretty charitable with his evaluations of our abilities to follow his thought processes and identify the connections between one of his thoughts and the next. Maybe he thinks we have more access to his internal mental states than we do.

The concept of "finding oneself" is pretty dumb, IMO.

It's not like there is some kernel of you-ness that is already there and has been there all along, hidden beneath all the auxiliary aspects of you, that you are tasked with discovering. You don't have some essence that remains when you strip away all of your other properties. You're just you.

How does it deny the possibility of development?

The fact that people don't have essential properties doesn't preclude the possibility of change over time. If anything, my account would suggest that people "develop" themselves rather than discover or "find" themselves.

"Finding" yourself suggests that you've had these secret properties all along that you just have to uncover. That there's some "true" character or vocation already hidden within you that you might be able to access if you just introspect really hard or something. Rather, one's character traits is more likely to be the result of decisions made and experiences had over time, rather than some hidden gem you already have deep in your heart or whatever. You are the things you habitually do.

i took what you said more like "you are what you are and ain't nothing that can really be done about it".

i guess we're inversely sort of on the same page. it's just additive vs. reductive.

but i don't think we are merely the sum of our decisions and experiences, at all. there's so much more to it than that. in the same way that one off night doesn't define an athlete. "You" are more than what happened to you and what your thoughts are. "You" are much more than whatever became embedded into you since infancy.

in that way, there is definitely something to "find", as you put it, in oneself.
