Another anniversary comes and goes and we are nowhere near getting the reissue.

Yeah he only mentioned it to promote his blog.

That he’d tour with ‘Machines of God’ with no concrete release date for the reissue on the 25th anniversary is wild. What a prankster.

I wonder if he's delaying this because it's the last reissue anyone would care about.

What is he talking about with the “Machina livestream” in the substack that came out tonight?

i doubt machina has any meaningful audience more than MSOTS or ZG, really. normal people don't even know what the fuck siamese dream is, they barely know rat in a cage, they don't know how jimmy clicks his hihats during pomp and circumstance...

We're talking about people who are already fans of the band, not random people who have heard 1979.

I'd like the reissue to put a bookend to the band.

I don't subscribe to the substack, so I have no idea if anything at all has actually been announced (I assume not since it would've leaked by now), but whatever is going on regarding the Machina announcements is leading to some stupid drama.
I mean, what even is this about?

https://www.reddit.com/r/SmashingPum...d_the_reissue/

I know we've been saying for a long time that this reissue is never coming out but... it's really never coming out, is it?

As Billy mentioned that Howie Weinberg has just done a mastering on the tapes I'm optimistic it will take not a year for the final artwork.

Maybe there's anger that the fans want a reissue of a record they didn't want when it initially came out? 25 year old bitterness?

stop ragging on the fans that want it like they're the fans that didn't want it.
wrong fucking audience you nonce.

I owned Machina. I devoured it. I had a radio CD promo of it. I bought anyways on CD. I bought the vinyl. I went to the Summersault show. I lined up at HMV for a signature. I stayed up all night to get tickets for the S&P tour. I called the TV station 10000 times to get tickets to be there for the quebec MTV performance. I DL M2 a thousand times and made sure everyone I knew had access to it if they wanted it. I wasted HOURS on the O-board. Don't fucking lecture me that I wasn't "there", or that I wasn't a real fan. Tell that to the people who fucked off and aren't around anymore to listen to you whine.

FUCKING NONCE.

scratch that. he gets cringy when talking about how fans at the advanced listening slogged on the album - despite the fact that quite possibly that his perspective may not be accurate and could be proven false, but that's how he saw it and that's all that mattered to him.

Actually some interesting tidbits in that livestream, and probably the most forthright and level-headed I've seen him be when discussing that last year or so of the band. It is strange he's chosen that "the hardcore fans hated Machina at the listening party" hill to die on when, as T&T pointed out, the receipts clearly show that was not the case. IIRC, the few less than positive comments were still fairly civil.

Yea coincidentally last week I was reading old google groups posts from Agnew et al about the listening parties and the mega fans seemed super pumped about it.

But he also kind of attracts a type of guy in some cases so maybe he overheard some wisecrack and had a "you really hurt my heart" moment on the inside lol

If Billy still thinks Machina is underappreciated surely he realizes it's more appreciated than any of the shlock he's put out since. Neither Machina is my favorite SP record by means but they are the last time Billy felt at all inspired in his songwriting to me.

There is a lot to these reissues, they aren't as simple as you making a mix disc for your girlfriend.

It might be easier to release Machina than the majority of Netphorians getting girlfriends though

I’d wager the majority of Netphorians are married with kids.

It's the same narrative of "Gish fans hated SD" / "SD fans hated MCIS". He believes the record was doomed to fail because he thought some "super fans" said they didn't like it.

He's not wrong about that tho. I see a lot of people saying "MCIS was trash", because they loved SD.

Both albums were critically and commercially successful. Who gives a shit what random fans say, they’re entitled to their opinion.

But if you release critical and commercial flop after commercial flop and your fans are leaving, until you have a hardcore bunch of super fans who are pinpointing exactly what is wrong with the changes you have made to your music, or a bunch of ill sycophants who will eat up anything without judgment, and you double down on the latter as your target market… whelp. Shrug.

(I say this as someone who has found a lot to enjoy in Billy’s output since 2000, and felt the last year has been largely positive)

Billy does.

On that note, I think this perfectly encapsulates how I feel about The Smashing Pumpkins. Their approach to music—constantly evolving and refusing to repeat themselves—has created a strangely fragmented fanbase. I often say that there are more "Gish fans," "Siamese Dream fans," or "Mellon Collie fans" than there are true Smashing Pumpkins fans. Many people latch onto a specific album, a particular sound, or the era when they first discovered the band, but they don’t necessarily follow the group as they venture into new creative territories. To be clear, I’m not saying you have to love everything they’ve ever done to be a fan—that’s not the point. But being a fan, in my opinion, requires more than just connecting with a single album. It’s about appreciating the band’s journey and their willingness to explore uncharted waters, even if it means leaving some listeners behind.

It’s a classic example, but Ben Folds got a ton of stick for the mixing on one of his albums, so he literally released a remixed version how fans wanted it, alongside the stems so the community could play around with it themselves.

Class.
