Same! Also, the way this is shaping up right now. This album, i think, will work for me. Sorry if other people don't think it's that good... But i'm digging them all (to different degrees) so far.
Feel lucky that it's bringing me some of that old joy. Sorry that it isn't hitting the spot for others. But some people like stuff on Oceania and Adore that I don't really like...
I guess I used to begrudge that, so I get what people are feeling to a point.

What i don't understand is the arguments about not hearing what Jimmy and James are bringing to the table here. Sure I can entertain that argument to a degree with CYR, but on this this so far. Nope. Not having that.
This isn't the same argument as saying you don't like the song, or the song is boring or the song is shit.

We have comparators in Adore, Oceania, Teargarden, Monuments - and if you can't hear Jimmy in Atum, I don't think you ever really understood what he was bringing that made his approach so distinctive in the first place - from my perspective, at least. Other drummers, Ram, I would welcome your thoughts. What he's bringing here in these first 4 tracks we have heard, can initially seem different, more restrained, polished and conservative in parts - in comparison to some of his other stuff in SP. But not all of his stuff.

Anyway. Sorry not sorry. x

I can't believe I'm saying this, but Empires might be better on album. Definitely sounded like Billy was struggling, so the vocal melodies might be more noticeable.

mix wasn't the best either

the live drums might make up for it though. always so dry in studio

Again, I don't hate it, but it's just so uninspired. It'll be butchered in the studio too, another Seek/Marchin'/Solara churned out rock riff that would've been a cool 8 second snippet on Pastichio Medley.

It's passable yes, but so are kidney stones.

I don’t get what you mean

Jimmy didn’t play on any of those records and James apparently recorded something on Adore, that’s it.

But this is exactly the point, they’re back but WPC has decided Logic is the way cool (read young) people make music these days. And therefore they’ve turned into NIN live band members.

Are we acting like Jimmy’s drums weren’t buried as hell and didn’t also sound like shit production-wise on MCIS? For having one of the best drummers ever in the band, SP has always had some of the worst drum production of any of the 90’s bands hands down.

they weren't buried, drums dont need to be massively fucking loud especially for their style... the drums on mellon collie allow for the songwriting to be the main focus with the rhythm moving very sexy underneath

i fucking love how the drums sound on mellon collie, sorry haters

I love MCIS, but sonically Flood’s production is very lo-fi compared to Butch. It’s very vibey. But I still don’t think Flood really knows how to record heavy bands very well. The songs are so strong there that it doesn’t matter. But Jimmy’s drums sound very tiny throughout most of the album.

With SP, yeah - they have made a weirdly few number of appearances there between 2000 and 2022 - I think just one? Two?

Did James ever play there solo with his band for his last solo one?

Hard agree, this is my first impression, too. Sounds like the same guitar sound on Quasar. I guess people think Oceania is classic Pumpkins now.

this MCIS discourse made me realize: i don't care anymore

the albums can sounds like whatever - what i truly end up listening to is live boots - SP shines live.

Ok this sounds much better than the first post. Jimmy’s drums especially sound better.

I think that's why it reminds me of As Rome Burns. It's called Empires, and ARB lyrics are "We are the new Gods / Same as the old Gods".
