Anyone in Belgium / Netherlands and the UK interested in some good live S.A. music?
Cause these guys have a great show.
They sing in Afrikaans too. And keep it old school Afrikaans. I dont know, I really enjoy them, and see now they're doing some touring over up there. Ha. If it helps, the email title I got only specified UK too! Those Afrikaans bastards. Heh, but it’s good stuff. They dress up as Old School South Africans. Well, they don’t dress up, they just always dress like that. It’s good stuff. |

The RKZ bar in Groningen is pretty hardcore. Basically there's this old Roman catholic hospital, which was abandoned, and occupied by squatters somewhere in the 70ies. After some initial discussion and verbal fighting, the city council decided in the 80ies to completely renew the place, and rent out rooms and apartments. It's still quite the alternative people's hangout (there's lots of biology students living there), quite the minisociety.

Sounds like an awesome venue. One with a story! Ha. Nice atmosphere, I’m sure…
These guys are hailed as something special on our music scene. Maybe cause so many bands here are eager for an international sound, and these guys just do their thing, sing in their language… I don’t know, but I do enjoy it quite a lot. Check out that ‘brand Suid Afrika’ video, for clips and things of typical outh African Afrikaans families back in the 80’s and such. Ha. Brand Suid Afrika obviously means ‘Burn South Africa’. I pick up suggestions of racism, but then I wonder if it’s not just reminiscing about the past, unrelated to any racial issues, and then feel a bit silly for reading into it too much. Either way: I enjoy them. |
