Billy is a genius
Like it or not.
Billy is a musical genius. He's one of the most successful musicians in history, and it's not because he's a good puppet. He's smart. Great songs/shows/albums, and deft business acumen. He's had his ups and downs as most musicians have. He's still released more amazing songs than shit or mediocre songs. He is more valuable than most of the bands and musicians that came to success in the 2000s. he's been in a down period since SP came back, but who knows, hopefully Oceania is as good as he claims. give billy some credit |

I kinda think it's hard to line Billy up against the likes of Bach and Beethoven and call him a genius and one of the most successful musicians in history. If people are still studying, learning and regularly playing his music, all over the world, 200 years from now, maybe people will say that. I....just don't see that as being very likely.

In this interview Billy is WAY less crazy than I expected. Do I disagree with him on some issues? Sure. But he sounds very clear minded.

Yeah, Rivers has still been able to produce a few pop gems here and there. Take this track for instance:
I love listening to this one in the heat while drinking a few brews... While its incredibly cheesy its just a great pop song... I mean the outro that starts around the 4 minute mark... How can someone not love that part? The vocal harmonies are fantastic.... The last 2 or 3 minutes just make the song. |

haha shit i had NO IDEA those guys were still touring. It would be fun to check em out in a club or something if the only songs they'd play would be off the album with Lump and Peaches (the name escapes me atm)....
I mean who would really wanna go see those guys live to hear new music or anything? it'd have to be a purely nostalgic gig. |

Musical genius transcends genre and time. If they don't measure up to previous and recognized talent then they're probably not actually musical geniuses. Cultural icons that happen to make organized noise, that is popular listening for a time with a select group of people, yes. Musical geniuses, not really. The unfortunate thing is that you have to study music to understand what musical genius looks like and most people haven't. Mist people know nothing about musical form or the history of western music and they just pick out something that sounds, like, really good to them, and they decide the person who made it is a musical genius. If it makes them happy, then who cares. But the truth is, it probably isn't anything great enough to survive the ravages of time and changing preferences. When works of music do that for a couple hundred years, then chances are, it was written by an actual musical genius. It isn't restricted to western music or western classical music. Plenty if blues and jazz will survive well into the next century because students all over the world are slaving away at their instruments for four hours a day to learn it so they can play it and improvise on it. Plenty of Eastern music, Indian, Chinese, Japanese traditional music is being learned by diligent and passionate musicians in those countries.
Sid Vicious and Billy Corgan will be remembered a little. But they're more in the category of music that "sounds really, really good...this must have been written by a MUSICAL GENIUS, man!!". You know, we're grown ups now. Let's stop kidding ourselves. |

you know even by your own definition you can't call these ancient white men geniuses
just because something is preserved by academia doesn't mean that the broader culture finds it precious. do i think people will be playing paint it black on their guitar on the corner 200 years from now, absolutely and it's easily more plausible than them knowing Beethoven's Ode to Joy. |
