The best ones I saw this year were Little Miss Sunshine, Stranger Than Fiction, and Thank You For Smoking. I don't really go to that many movies, that's why there is Netflix.

5 WORST MOVIES OF 2006

A lot of things in life suck, however, you'd be hard pressed to find five cinematic crapterpieces that sucked harder than these stinkers in 2006. Read, be wary, and never, EVER, under any circumstances watch these films.

#5
Basic Instinct 2

Whenever a movie is made solely because of the lead starlet suing over a pay or play deal, that’s probably a not good sign. Sharon Stone reprises her star-making role *cough* as Catherine Tremell, the mystery novelist with "Risk Addiction". With Stone alternately shrieking like a shrew, or being about as sexy as your grandmother, much badness ensues. Enjoyable in a terrible movie / campy kind of way, but completely limp as a thriller or eroticism.

#4
Eragon

An unoriginal rip off of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, released solely at X-Mas 2006 because its the time of year audiences hunger for a fantasy film. Following the not-compelling adventures of a not-compelling dragonrider, the movie is so horribly over the top that its pure crap. The inclusion of a badly animated psychic dragon doesn't help things. Movies like this give the word "geek" a bad name.

#3
Little Man

Here's one of the worst ideas in recent moviemaking history: Use CGI to make one of the many untalented Wayans' Brothers an ugly, creepy little baby. The worst offense in this movie is how unfunny it is. People getting hit in the nuts repeatedly does not equal funny. Somebody yelling does not equal funny. Poop changing jokes does not equal funny. This movie reinforces the idea that there should be a statue of limitations on how many Wayans' Brothers can appear on screen in any given year.

#2
Turistas

Torture porn without the torture or the porn. This unwatchable dreck is about a bunch of abandoned idiot tourists, who are captured by savage locals who decide to slice and dice idiots. Of the film’s many offences: 1) It shouldn't take a solid hour until something approaching a "horror" scene happens. 2) Casting directors should actually cast actors who can act. 3) If you're going to sell it as a sex and violence romp, actually give us something substantial from either of those categories. 4) The climatic action showdown should be actually visible to the audience. The torture porn genre is sadistic crap, however, Turistas even fails at being sadistic crap.

#1
When A Stranger Calls

A cheap cash-in horror movie made solely get idiot teenagers to watch for a big opening weekend. This film is not scary at all, absolutely nothing happens, and the main target of the stalker is a chick who can't emote to save her life. Camilla Belle, you're a horrible actress and you have to stop inflicting your acting upon the world right now. There is absolutely nothing redeemable about When A Stranger Calls. It is a complete waste of time. If you see it at the video store, please destroy the copy to save others

10 BEST OF 2006
2006 was an odd year at the movies; there were a scattering of lowlights and highlights amidst the usual weekly brigade of disposable, forgettable releases. However, if you wanted the goods, you had to search a little bit to find it. For the year that was, here were the best:

#10
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children

This direct-to-DVD computer animated movie probably won’t make a lot of sense to anyone who hasn’t played the seminal videogame, Final Fantasy IV. However, this film absolutely draw-dropping and astounding to watch, making sense of it be damned. Advent Children gives all Pixar movies a run for the title of “Best-looking CGI film ever”. And, with all the hyper-kinetic direction, it has some of the most craziest, biggest, and awesomest action scenes of all year. For action junkies, CGI fans, video game buffs, and anime freaks, this is worth checking out.

#9
United 93

Shot with immediate and visceral you-are-there handheld direction, Director Paul Greengrass’ take on the doomed flight that crashed into Pennsylvania on 9/11 is unforgettable in its realistic, documentary-style. You feel every moment of that condemned flight as Greengrass takes you inside the final flight of United 93. The way the film builds to its inevitable climax that creates one of the tensest thrillers of all year. Very moving, shatteringly powerful, and a hellova lot better than Oliver Stone’s take on that same day.

#8
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

There’s a reason the flick grossed 400+ million dollars - because its freakin awesome, that’s why! Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow firmly solidifies his place as a modern, pop-culture icon, creating a character that’ll be remembered forever. With epic action, a huge scope, groundbreaking visual FX, and a completely crazy, unhinged vibe, this is one of the strangest, and yet most crowd-pleasing, blockbusters in recent years. With a great cliffhanger ending, Dead Man's Chest leaves you wishing that Part 3 was here tomorrow.

#7
Blood Diamond

A dark and entertaining message movie, delivered in a jungle warfare package. Blood Diamond is about the illegal running of diamonds out of Africa and into our jewelry stores, and the lives that are sacrificed for it. Centering on the story of an African peasant (Djimon Hounsou) trying to find his family, as he teams up with a gritty rouge diamond smuggler (Leonardo DiCaprio) to find a rare diamond. Featuring some snappy dialogue, pulse pounding fights, great performances, and even a message about living and dying in Afirca, it’s a piece of formula strung together to have resonance.

#6
Little Miss Sunshine

One of the oddest movies around, this family road-trip movie about a lovable bunch of dysfunctional and depressed freaks making their way to California wins you over with its strange style. Directed by music video mavericks Jonathan Dayton and Valarie Faris (check out their video for “1979” for music video gold), Sunshine is strange, at times unsettling, but ultimately enjoyable. Great performances by all involved, with particular recognition to Steve Carell for conveying sympathy, weirdness, quiet desperation, and more.

#5
Brick

Another oddity, this one a dark detective story from the black and white heyday… expect its in colour, set in the here and now, and takes place mostly at a high school. When his girlfriend (Lost’s Emile de Ravin) turns up murdered, Brendan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) follows the clues to find out the who’s, why’s and how’s. Its so bizarre to have a modern high-school setting set to the pace of ‘40s noir-ish beats, yet it somehow hangs together in a “this should not work yet somehow it is” way. The skill showed off by first time writer/director Rian Johnson is striking, and the dialogue’s staccato rhythms make for a unique experience.

#4
V for Vendetta

Elegant anarchy. This slightly loose adaptation of Alan Moore and David Lloyd’s comic book draws you into its futuristic, fascist world. Hugo Weaving delivers an amazing performance as the terrorist V. Hidden behind a mask the entire time, Weaving works wonders with his voice and body movements. Any time you can throw political allegory wrapped up in a sci-fi / comic book flick, you have a definite winner. Featuring some jaw-dropping visuals by Director James McTeigue and the final cinematography work of Adrian Biddle. For just a visual standpoint, this shouldn’t be missed.

#3
The Departed

Martin Scorsese in hardcore, gritty bad guys and badder guys mode, with plenty of nifty beat-downs and f-bombs thrown about. Its joy lies in watching the plot twists uncoil themselves as the noose closes tighter around the necks of undercover agent (Leonardo DiCaprio) and crooked cop (Matt Damon) working at opposite ends. Throw in an insane-even-for-him Jack Nicholson performance, trademark Scorsese ultra-violence, and career-defining performances by both male leads, and you have a movie that should, hopefully, finally, get Scorsese a frickin’ Oscar.

#2
The War Tapes

A documentary that puts you on ground-level of the Iraq war. U.S. soldiers were given handheld video cameras to film their tours of duty in Iraq, and The War Tapes is the result. Its surprisingly darkly humorous – funny in a way that only people who are in a live-fire zone can be, and graphically gory as it shows the consequences of when humans try to destroy each other. The gut-wrenching final act where the soldiers return home, wounded in more ways than one, will make you to reflect on the cost of war.

#1
The Prestige

Director Christopher Nolan (Batman Begins, Memento) takes a story about dueling magicians and creates a transient filmmaking experience. Both Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman, two actors who hit the mainstream with comic book heroes, manage to convey the devolution from friendship to murderous rivalry with believability. It’s a pitch-black revenge story set against the foggy landscape of 18th Century London that’s beautiful to watch, excellently made, impeccably performed, and infinitely re-watchable. Some may complain about the umpteen levels of twists and plot turns, but it’s a story about magicians, of course there’s going to be narrative trap doors built into it! The Prestige is true moviemaking magic.

Thank You For Smoking, A Prairie Home Companion, and Snakes On a Plane got bounced from the top 10 list with much internal agonizing. Almost put Munich on there, too, cause it didn't go wide till 2006, but decided against it.

Superman Returns would have made the worst list if I didn't just like the plane sequence and Spacey's performance so dang much.
