Slow Dawn is a pretty compelling argument for the whole stylistic change of the Machinas

it's where everything "works"

Imagine being over 30 and unironically using the term “mid”

I’m 34 and I’m from the Midwest. You think your life is hard?

I'm not offended, just actually surprised by how many people consider the album to sound fine as is in light of how pristine and polished most of the band's stuff was.

Anyway, anyone still got their burned Machina CDs from back in the day? Mine were MP3 sourced and had the covers printed on crappy A4 paper. Always meant to go back and do a better version.

again, it sounds better than anything Billy has recorded ever since, despite -- and partly because of -- how pristinely those records were produced. to me, those records all sound like highly polished turds. the music sucks, the production reveals how much it sucks, and then it all gets passed through brickwall compression so there is no breathing room for any remnants of anything that doesn't suck, it's just maximal suckiness in your face at all times

the lo fi sound is part of why i like machina II. i like music recorded in low fidelity. it doesn't have to all be pristine and perfect. low fidelity is its own aesthetic and character. i don't think machina II should be "cleaned up" beyond a flat transfer of the master tapes. anything done to it with the intention of cleaning it up would be removing that part of its character.

like cleaning up an old collectible coin, not that care for coin collecting, but I know that collecters never clean coins because the dirt and wear is what makes the coin unique and is reflective of the journey that it took to get there.

yes, there is such a thing as sounding better and sounding worse, but a lot of music sounds better when it sounds worse

i've said it before

okay, i would not be surprised if those bottlegs sound like shit. I've only ever listened to the rips of the original vinyl by Eric Agnew, Virgin, Q101 and SPIFC

I spun it once, and from what I can remember, it sounded a bit, I dunno, 'smooth', bassier, but not awful or anything. Pretty good to my ears. At the time I thought I was hearing things brought out I'd never really been able to hear before, but it was probably just the inherent vinyl sound. Mainly got it for the sake of having something with the MII art aesthetic, which is one of the things I love most about that album and I don't expect will be revisited in any theoretical reissue.

Someone else in that thread got one and weighed in:

Obtained one of these in the mail today. Wanted to to weigh in.

Listened to it tonight on my any Audio Technica LP-120 w/ A3SE cartridge. Goes through a Pro-Ject pre amp into my Onkyo receiver and out my Definitive Technology book shelf speakers.

To my ears, definitely sounds awesome. Wish we had more information on it. It does sound a smidge different, can’t tell if it is a new rip or just someone tried their own hand at “mastering” the old files we’ve had for years. Noted little cuts at the end of tracks, like the classic, “jungle drummed out” at the end of Lucky 13 is missing. Also, it seems to be a little faster than it is supposed to be, much like one of the early rips circulated back in 2000 was. I adjusted the pitch on the turntable down a little bit to counteract this. I mention this more, as I know some people LIKE that faster rip of Machina and this may be of note to them.

I find the choices of tracks on disc 4 to be curious, would have been rad if whoever assembled this put Arising or other live Machina era tracks on it, but it’s still kinda cool to have a couple Adore demos and the Bowie birthday tracks on vinyl. Beggars can’t be choosers, I suppose.

Glad to have got one. Who knows, if the reissue ever comes out and the new mixes fail to deliver the goods, might be even happier to have this.

Cheers.

I said my piece in that thread too

I would never buy such an item, but if those who have bought it like how it sounds, well, I'm happy for them

yes but imo the solo in the end should have been cut imho it would have been a much better call to have something like the cherub rock flanging effectt with some soma style leads just before the main solo kicks in

i dunno i'm open to ideas what do you think?

Nah you know what fuck it I'm happy to live in my time capsule from 2000 where everything was objectively perfect because my memories are oh so precious and not to ever ever be tampered with even though nothing would stop me from revisiting them at any time

maybe billy doesnt need to waste his time revisiting this album
and he can instead focus on new material. because that's been a recipe for success.
