He has this personality disorder where he thinks people don't like him, so it makes him want to "prove them wrong". Most people find this SOOO personality type boring. The druggies were probably the only ones who could put up with him because they could tune him out it, and Billy obviously felt superior to them. He has been this man-child all his life.

I'm really glad he had the work ethic to persevere. He's messed in the head, he had to be to get to where he got.
