Default I think the ? song is called "?"

I'm talking about the new song played on 6/23 and 6/24. Some of you are calling it "The Song I Sing".

The lyrics are about questions and answers, and Billy asks a bunch of questions in it. I have a recording, but it sounds like shit. Anyway, there are a lot of mentions of questions in it. Both setlists show it as "?". A second new song was played on 6/24, and it was listed on the setlist as "I Don't Mind". So I think "?" is simply "?".

It's like "Untitled" being called "Untitled". You get used to it, and then it doesn't sound silly anymore.

Discuss.

If so, Billy has reached a new level of pretention - a symbol as a song title. C'mon, man, leave that to Sigur Ros.

? is a pretty good name for it, i agree with you. It doesn't make sense he would name the song he wrote the day of a show but not one he wrote a night before the show he played it at first.

"?" as a title would make sense, reading the setlists I thought the 6/24 "I Don't Mind" was going to be the newly named song from 6/23 -- but being that it remained "?" the second night I have to agree that your argument holds weight.

I thought I Don't Mind was the first new song and the ? track on the most recent set list was the new new song o.O

But that was just my impression. I have heard the new new song outside of the set list and don't know where it falls and if it is the ? or I Don't Mind.

I don't think it is... hence the "Unknown" on spfc.

I was watching the soundbooth during the 6/23 show.. one of the laptops listed the song titles for every song as they were being played (so yeah.. i knew "with every light" was gonna be their second encore while everyone else was headed out the door).

While "?" was being played... nothing appeared... it remained on 1979 which was the song before "?"

Well, he's already done "Untitled" and "TheFutureEmbrace". It's only natural that he'd move on to punctuation. This is like Prince level of pretention... naming something after a symbol. It wouldn't surprise me.

I was just in front of the soundboard too, but I purposely didn't look around for precisely that reason - I didn't want to spoil any surprises.

That's an interesting observation, though. I still say it's called "?". It just makes perfect sense with the lyrics. Maybe the laptop was for the light guy to know which patterns to use, and they didn't have a predefined pattern for "?"... so nothing was shown on the screen? Maybe the software only shows alphanumeric characters? I don't know, maybe I'm just grasping at straws here, but there could be another explanation for what you saw. Maybe someone manually typed the setlist into the laptop before the show, based on one of the paper setlists. When they saw "?", they entered nothing.

This might all be settled if Billy keeps playing this song at the residencies.

If he starts naming songs after punctuation marks, when will he start using a symbol for his name a la Prince?

When have Sigur used a symbol as a song title?

Album title, yes: ( )

Complete lack of song titles for an album, yes.

Symbol as a song title? I can't think of any - icelandic characters don't count.

Tonight the sound mixers laptop read "Question Mark." This laptop was not for the light guy.

i think it's called ? as well. it could be his shorthand for question perhaps? alot of the titles have been being shortened.

I was thinking about this while i just drove home from work.

I also listened to some scorpions at work today. they sing alot of songs i have heard before and are pretty good so far as late 70's electric rock goes.

Nice. This supports my theory. Thanks for the info. And damn you for going to more shows than me.

edit: Someone please post the 1999 official-site question mark so this topic can be complete.

Could this song be related to Cho Seung-Hui, the guy that shot a bunch of people at Virginia Tech? He liked to call himself "Question Mark" or just "?", if you recall.. I haven't heard the song or lyrics, so I don't even know if it would be considered a dark song or if that title would make sense

Doesn't make sense with the lyrics as far as I can tell.

actually doesnt the song say something about violence rising? and it says something about writing and that Cho guy only wrote things, he never really talked to anyone. that person could be right... i dont like to think about billy writing about that though..............
