These two bands had quite a lot of similarities and were pretty much neck and neck in the early 80s, though EATB failed to break America and U2's albums sold more. They both released 4 albums between 1980-84. EATB were 4 working class lads from Liverpool just across the Irish Sea from Dublin. They both had an iconic frontman and guitarist. Ian McCulloch was quite gobby, had a big ego and a lot of self belief. Will Sargent guitar playing defined EATB sound in the same way that Edge's defined U2. They both had a liking for big coats and wintry settings - the cover for Porcupine is very reminiscent of U2's video for New Year's Day. Ocean Rain was EATB's seminal album from 1984 and contains their finest song 'The Killing Moon'. It was featured at the start of the film 'Donnie Darko'. |

Your sarcasm is noted but there are similarities between early U2 and the Bunnymen. I'm not making this stuff up. It can be heard the most on Crocodiles and Heaven Up Here and Boy and October.

I'd say they were about equal. With the fourth albums (Unforgettable Fire and Ocean Rain) being the best work that each band did.

If you want to listen to a really great band that were peers of U2 and Echo & The Bunnymen but that for some reason didn't achieve the same success check this album out, The Sound "From the Lion's Mouth". :
Every bit as good as anything U2 or E&TB did early on. |

i know that sound album. i think it's neither as catchy as the best u2 nor as ("urgent"? "infectious"?) as eatb. but its alright.

the sound were great, especially that record. and of course, the chameleons were just as great and far less celebrated than either band in question. same goes for mighty lemon drops' world without end and the grapes of wrath, who all you early-REM loving kids should get into. i could go on, but there's sad lovers and giants to conted with as well. it's less that these bands are any better or worse than u2/echo, but they all strike close to the same turf.
anyway, to answer the question- it's u2. though heaven up here beats the snot out of october. |

Agreed about Heaven Up Here being better than October. I think War and Porcupine would be about a tie for me. Unforgettable Fire is certainly better than Ocean Rain and Boy is certainly better than Crocodiles.
