Some people who study music academically don't even know how to play an instrument (not that this makes their expertise any less valid, though I personally don't understand why it would be fun to learn all those sex moves if they never intend to actually make use of them), but I'm pretty sure this guy did actual music composition in school, rather than just studying the theory.

I also don't think that explaining something robs it of the effect. Sunsets aren't any less beautiful after you learn about atmospheric refraction, and flowers don't smell any worse just because you know about botany and olfactory receptors. I learned a lot from this video.
