Question Do we believe the things Richard Patrick (Filter) is saying about D'Arcy here are acc

urate or false? this interview is from at least 2 years ago..

specifically, he is alleging that the siamese dream vocal sound is a mix of Bill and D'Arcy, and that D'Arcy encouraged Bill to "sing like a little boy" and then she would sing the same thing to double it, and the resulting combined vocals make up the "OG SP sound"

this is in direct contrast to a story I remember Bill giving, when he was doing his predictably short-lived "deep dives" series, which i don't think ever made it past gish, and he told a story about d'arcy wanting to sing on Daydream and how she simply wasn't very good, and struggled with the demanding process of doing take after take after take to get it to the standards they expected.

Richard Patrick seems to me like the kind of guy who would be more than happy to repeat something that sounds interesting without bothering to check on its accuracy. relatedly, given what we've heard from D'Arcy sporadically over the last 20 years, it's not too hard to imagine her saying things to someone that aren't entirely accurate. either way, seems not very good to go saying things like this unless they are actually true.

i'm curious if anyone's come across a reliable source out there, at all, ever, that corroborates what he's saying here

here is the interview. he speaks about D'arcy from 13:33 - 16:30, and this specific part I'm talking about is 14:30 - 15:25

Honestly even a washed-up rockstar like Richard Patrick sounds like a far more reliable source than 2020 B0lly.

I remember reading some old Billy quotes where we was really pushing for the feminine element of the band, so it would totally make sense.

Honestly wtf does this mean? They combined their 2 voices into one? No, I don't belive that.

its commonly done in pop production.... you are often layering the same part many times because it sounds more full and polished that way and if you have another voice doing the same notes but with a slightly different tone it can thicken the vocal sound even more

1 - can we please move this thread to the SP board? i know it can be done, despite what Joey Goldberg says. i can tell from some of the pixels

2 - someone help me please square these things up -- Billy went on and on about how D'arcy simply could not sing, he said she is just not a good singer. and here we are told that her vocals accompany Billy's all over siamese dream, a record that billy and pretty much everyone else regards as this highly polished album, painstakingly crafted to sonic perfection? i'm having a hard time believing that he'd have a bad singer who it was painful getting 1 song down with, sing all over the album with him

i can believe that perhaps here and there, in spots, d'arcy sang something in there with him. but richard patrick said its basically at the core of the sound. he specifically sang a line from cherub rock, for example.. i dunno man. plus butch vig never mentioned anything like this to my recollection

If it were true, Wretzky probably would have mentioned it, Vig would have mentioned it, it would probably be written down somewhere that each song features her vocals, etc.

Corgan can be a glory hog who downplays others' contributions, especially retroactively when they fall out of his favour, but I don't think even he's revisionist enough to claim that somebody's work isn't on an album when that person came to the studio and laid down tracks that are in the final mix.

The vocal tracks also don't sound like two different people singing harmonies or singing in unison. They just sound like Corgan.

I think it's more likely that Filter guy is mistaken rather than lying.

"I have a hard time thinking of men trying to sing my songs, because I think my perspective is very much feminine... For me the idea of having a feminine perspective is a willingness to be vulnerable. It's very easy to cock-rock and posture. I can't help but wear my heart on my sleeve—I'm like nervous endings. That's just the way that I am and, to me, that's very female because it's not a male thing to do. A male thing to do would be to fuckin' posture."

Certainly one of the main reasons why most "SP" music post-2000 has sucked donkey balls

D'arcy said something like this during the whole 2018 craziness. She also said that WPC can sing in several voices at the same time.

It's a well known fact that she recorded a lot of more vocals for SD. I was even expecting some alternative versions to be part of the reissue. I don't think she did anything similar for any other album tho. What she said recently was that Billy used her vocals as a guide.

I can hear it. I always heard a doubled voice in Cherub Rock for instance. You can really hear a low and a high on the "doesn't matter what you believe in" line. Now, it could be Billy doing both, or it could be D'arcy. Definitely there in Soma as stated.

Besides, she is literally singing that part on this:

so it's not a stretch to imagine she sang on the album.

I'd say there were so many parts recorded for that album that they lost track of who did what (besides Billy doing all the guitars and bass).

Richard Patrick has always been a total jackass. She only does backing vocals on SD in a couple songs. It’s mostly all Billy and his doubled vocals.

Reminds me of the time he had Tegan and Sara on his Podcast and he's talking about being a feminist and abusing D'arcy, but trying to explain that it's OK because he abuses James and Jimmy the same amount.

That whole episode was an exercise in ego stroking and doubling down on shitty behavior, and sadly it was one of the better ones.
