Japanese Whispers, though for the benefit of HouseofAss, I would like to note that it is a compilation album.

Yeah, it sounds so neutered and forced. It's like Zeitgeist Jr.

neither is Substance by New Order, but that didn't stop the man in the music store from replying "that's one of the best albums EVER" when I wore a shirt of it, nor did it stop me from replying "hell yeah, man. hell yeah"

I feel sorry for you both. No "best album ever" has tracks like State of the Nation, Shellshock, or Sub-culture on it. But I suppose if you need an introduction to their early work, it is a good place to start.

i'm not sure why you mentioned three good songs as part of your argument as to why it wouldn't be the best thing ever, but hey, "you do you"

Some of NO’s worst work in my opinion. Those songs are horrible. I guess we just disagree.

I don't think I ever listened to it after the first time on the Greyhound with Wisconsin gas station earbuds. Even through a tin can it was clearly not worth a repeat even out of curiosity

I flat out love "With Sympathy" and "Marchin' On" in general I think it is a strong effort - especially coming after the dismal MTAE, with two minor missteps ("Alienation" and the Billy backing vox effect on "Knights of Malta"). Looking forward to more, hoping vol.2 might be closer to full album length.

I dig it about the same, 5/10

Not terrible enough to actively hate, but not good enough to enter my regular listening diet

Probably it’s gonna be meadow goats is the only track makes it off here onto my “bill corg - lost in the wilderness yrs vol 1” comp. With Symps got a nice sound but gosh those lyrics are fucken BAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRF

Silvery, Marching & Sympathy definitely have my place in a "SP2 Salvageables" list, but yeah it really is stunning how plastic of a production this thing has. Don't even know if it's actually the fault of Rubin, Corgan, or somebody in the mixing stage, but hey, god bless 'em!

You're right, I don't consider Japanese Whispers an album. Pisces on the other hand...

JW is a pretty damn cohesive collection of tracks, imo. One of the earliest things I even heard by the Cure just because it had Lovecats on it

I listened to this album once and then didn't listen to it again because it was so meh.

Just now I heard Silvery Sometimes for the first time since. I thought it was good.

Just re listened; first time in months:

-Knights of Malta - still a very decent experiment, which you kind of have to applaud him for not just doing a whole album-ep-y of Zeit 2.0 Solara riffing. Proof that he's still trying to reach for something unique sounding, even if it's weird.

-Silvery Sometimes - Still love this song. Still would stack it into my top 5 songs that WPC has done from 2007 to present. Videos don't mean much in 2019, but still - WHY IS THAT INTRO SO LONG. Also, that song does NOT translate to a live setting for some reason. Probably the same reason that 1979 isn't the best live song. Just so great on an album, but live it just stalls.

-Travels - Good other thread about this one currently

-Solara - Should have been the second single. Video should have been released as the way to debut the song, despite the video being weirdo too.

-Alienation - Worst on the album by a mile, poll in that thread I made months ago is proof that this is a universal consensus

-Marchin - Agreed on other people here- Zeitgeisty. Not horrible, but weirdly forgettable, despite the old school WPC singing at the onset of it

-With Sympathy - Easily 2nd place on the album for me.

-Seek - Fun but forgettable.

the only thing anyone bothered ETA-ing anymore was Machina reissue, & even that's become a running joke
