I don’t understand how this is worse than the flu unless China is lying to us

I don't know if China still has the keys to that particular lock at this junction, eh.

They are lying, however

1. no one has any immunity whatsoever
2. higher death and severe cases percentage
3. ability to cause permanent lung damage to survivors
4. higher transmission rate (likely)
5. very high death rate in 60+ age group
6. no countermeasures available yet
7. longer incubation period
8. high transmission from people with no symptoms. a high majority of those who have the flu enough to be contagious show symptoms and can isolate themselves. you can't isolate if you don't know. and people who have shown to be 'cured' later show up as having it again after further testing. 'cured' is improved lung CT scan and 2 negative tests.

it is going to kill a lot of people and probably become another flu-type virus (constantly going around year after year), so it will not be 'worse' necessarily but an ADDITION of another dangerous flu-like virus. in the meantime, while there is no immunity and no vaccine or proven antivirals that work, transmission and death rate will be much higher than the flu - probably 1-2%, higher over 60, 8-15% or so over 70

outside of China, some countries show much higher death rates, but that might be because they're only testing severe cases.

a lot is still unknown. China has had to turn many people away because they don't have facilities or even enough tests. they are definitely under-reporting cases, very likely deaths as well.

Trump official refuses to say a coronavirus vaccine would be affordable to all

Giving evidence to Congress on the administration's efforts to contain the deadly virus, Mr Azar said: "We would want to ensure that we work to make it affordable, but we can't control that price, because we need the private sector to invest. Price controls won't get us there."

I don't want to be a dick, Erica Badu, but is there a chance it's not doing you any favours to be quite this focused on the issue?

I'm not all that focused, really. I read for about 30 mins a day and post about it on here only. But I appreciate the concern.

Japan is closing all schools for a MONTH. S Korea up to 2000+ infected. Italy at 650/17 and 56 in intensive care. https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsan...ls-for-a-month

Trump is a piece of fucking shit. That speech on the virus was so terrible I can't even believe it happened. And now scientists are instructed not to talk about COVID-19 without running through Pence first.

Bunch of different countries reporting first infections yesterday/today: Pakistan, North Macedonia, Georgia, Estonia, Denmark, Norway and Romania

American media has finally realized this is a big deal. Good, but also probably panic will set in as it gets worse, assuming we actually start testing people. Markets are a shit show, not surprising.

Likely we'll see the first reported USA death in the next few days.

This is becoming more and more stressful for me to read about. I just want to spray bleach down the throat of anyone that coughs, then set the whole building they were in on fire, and make a ring of salt around it. You know, preventative care.

Cool

Been reading lots about how likely a global recession like 2008 is, the answer to which seems to be worsening day by day

Fun and cool to be constantly wondering what would be worse for my family: dying, or losing our jobs and health insurance

The reports and articles, etc., don't seem to go into great detail as to the symptoms of actually having the virus.

Is that because it's really not enough to sell website clicks when you take away things like infection rate and the deaths of the more susceptible (to death)?

yes and yes

however, symptoms are:

fever, cough, sore throat, abnormal chest xray, bilateral pneumonia, bronchitis, breathing difficulty, headache, secondary infections, low O2, fatigue

less common: gastrointestinal problems, kidney failure

basically the flu progressing to viral pneumonia if it gets bad

typically people have a cough/fever for about a week and then breathing difficulty brings them to hospital (https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/20/healt...ned/index.html)

Thank you for explaining this clearer as to why this is such a big deal better than anyone has. Not being sarcastic, 100% honest.

It is very likely. Who would’ve thought this virus would’ve popped Trump’s fake economy bubble?

According to the BBC:

Quote:
At least 210 patients have died in Iran, health sources have told BBC Persian, way above the official figure of 34. Iran denies withholding information about the number of people infected.
https://www.bbc.com/news/live/world-51669434

That would make Iran have way more deaths than anyone else outside of China. Even 34 is the highest outside of China, actually.

They only have 388 officially confirmed cases. If it's true 210 are dead, that's at least 21,000 cases, assuming 1% mortality.

New countries with first infections today: Monaco, Iceland, Azerbaijan, Belarus, New Zealand, Lithuania, Nigeria (RIP Africa), Netherlands, Mexico and San Marino

On every content except Antarctica now.

6th Diamond Princess person died.

Italy #3 in deaths now, with 14.

USA still testing almost nobody.

This is why you don't greet people by kissing them on the face, Italy.

If it's at all proportionate to the number of face kisses per greeting, Iran is definitely fudging numbers.

I went to a dinner party tonight where one of the guests was saying that China created the germ because their government wanted to stop the US from importing bibles that didn't alter the name of Jesus. I only ate and drank what I brought to the party after that.
