Yeah that as a pretty brutal bait and switch right there. I kinda had this feeling that I get every time it looks like a character i'm rooting for is going to get their way but god damn i'll be picturing that in my head all week

I might watch this if they had Lena Headey take her kit off. But they don't so what's the point. Also she looks terrible with that hair anyway.
I'm the kinda geek that collect gamebooks (most of which are fantasy themed) and yet when i see Games of Thrones ads i think "this looks too nerdy for me". I think i like fantasy as an idea but in reality when they make movies or series in the genre, it just pisses me off. |

yeah so I made the Game of Thrones commiseration thread already, even called it a commiseration thread, but why don't you all just go and ignore my efforts to cater for our emotional needs, as GoT fans

Glad you read them so I wouldn't have to. I mean on that one I'm just gonna go ahead and trust that description. When I see fantasy books advertised with writers names in gigantic letters and gaudy covers I just think this is probably shit. So far all I tried have not proved me wrong (its good if I can make it past the first 20 pages). I'm pretty much of the mind there's no point in reading fantasy after Tolkien. It's not a genre that got better. Mainly because nerds and geeks that have an interest in writing it got worse as opposed to how they were 60 or 70 years back. |

dude stop shutting the door on the world
i can't refute your thesis since i am a scifi nerd and fantasy is for MORON LOSER DICKWEEDS WHO LIVE IN DORKLAND but still who is to say there isn't a william gibson or neil stephenson of fantasy out there i do know i like pratchett though |

his setting is pretty messed up and difficult – makes grrm look like tolkien – and the first book (the darkness that comes before) is weaker than everything after it, but it's probably the smartest and challenging-in-a-good-way fiction i've ever read |

And trots i like Gibson fine but i found Snow Crash on the street years ago (i didnt even know the book or who Neal Stephenson was back then) and tried to read it and gave up after like a 100 pages. I couldnt keep interested. Maybe i should just give up reading altogether. Though definitely when it comes to sci fi it's not populated with as many hacks as fantasy. Or at least, there's more good authors to counterbalance the hacks. |

who may or may not appreciate dune but a) i think he does and b) even if he doesn't, he probably wouldn't rule out of consideration a standalone work purely on the basis of another person's comparison, because he's not, you know, an insufferable internet windbag
