It started creeping in around Zwan.

It fully arrived in TFE / Zeitgeist.

The vocals weren’t an issue on Machina or any of the classic band’s work, WTF gentlemen?

Zwan was the moment. Same tone, vibrato added. No dynamics. Only time he calmed down on that album was on Of A Broken Heart.

They were highly enjoyable to me due to the interesting breathy-growling dynamic, and the audible emotion, but there were definitely some sour notes and "unpleasant sounds," which was the question. That's my gentleman's take.

You all realize that even in the height of SP popularity, the main negative from non fans was always Billy's voice. It's just now more people are picking up on it. The only thing that has really changed is he is not as angry. Everything else is basically the same.

He’s much older now. The voice changes with age. He may have changed his technique and the way he does things also. But he’s never going to sound like he’s 28 again. He had a higher pitched voice to begin with. Most singers like that sound considerably different when they’re older.

He says constantly he can still sing the old way, and even demonstrated such on one of the podcasts. Ahem.

He says that, but his voice is deeper now. Saffron sounds like him trying to sing the old way and it sounds horrid.

OMG he got vocal coaching around Zwan and that’s why he sings like this now. He can still sing the old way it’s a choice.

It sounds bad on Saffron because of the way it was mixed. Double track that bad boy, add a chorus effect from an Eventide harmonizer, and bring it down a good number of dBs into the mix, and you'd have something very like the old sound.

Seriously, I could spend 5 minutes behind the desk in his studio and I'd sort these issues.

Hire me Billy. Even as a consultant.

Saffron???? He just doesnt hit the right notes. It is false( at least at the beginning).

Add anything to fake your bad singing for gods sake bill. That is the reason why people skip songs..either his voice is 15 db above the rest or he sings like a turd.

With all thses techmical.possibilities i do not get why for gods sake he doesnt use them with his fu ked up voice.

Gimme 10 minutes evil and i fix that with some random stock plugins.

There’d be no loss in Billy producing different mixes, other artists have done so when facing similar criticism. But of course Lord Spirit Master Corgan can accept no criticism.

Lemme ask YOU a question. Do you think he'd pass up on the chance to produce Gaylord Swift debut album?

Wound slaps. The only shit vocal performance in SP1 was Untitled. Fuck outta here. I’m gonna listen to Machina while I pretend to work at the office now.

Annie Dog was worse than Untitled.

Tales was probably worse as well, though he was going for abrasive. Here Is No Why, while full of passion and power (exactly what is missing now) is still fairly grating on the ear in places.

C'mon mang. C'mon!

"The song was our way of saying ‘fuck you’ to all those people who thought we’d somehow lost our minds and weren’t able to return home. We were in the studio for what appeared to be the last time, so it was very emotional, and we had only three days.”

— Billy Corgan, "Signal to Noise: The Sonic Diary of the Smashing Pumpkins". EQ Magazine. October 2008.
