Sorry ... i pressed enter by accident...

Very few bands from Chicago have made it to "Pink Floyd status," but Kill Hannah call themselves friends with that city’s number one music son who has achieved that: Smashing Pumpkins’ lead singer Billy Corgan.

"We just had dinner with him in L.A. four days ago," Mat tells me. Before the show, Hannah sound master Ben told me that Hannah had heard some new tracks from the reunited Pumpkins and so I decide to plumb for details.

"We heard two tracks with no vocals. Just one guitar and drums," he describes to me. "I’d say just the very floor plan of two songs and they both sound pretty epic. The two songs could be… I’d say they probably have the intelligence of the [Machina - the Machines of God] record but the accessibility of [Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness]. So I think it’s going to be just what a fan would want."

wow. so billy and jimmy are just recording with themselves only? interesting. i wonder if they're still narrowing down choices for the rest of the band, or if billy would do like he did with siamese dream and just record the entire album himself.

thats funny, "intelligence of machina". i dont think id hear anything and think, "you know what, this might just be just as clever as machina!!!!111" good to here any sort of reference to MCIS though.

Machina had more sophisticated arrangements than Mellon Collie did....that's just my opinion but I think that's what Mat meant.

Chances are they're just going to Siamese it, and Billy will do all Guitars and Bass himself.

do you think the liner notes will still say "The Smashing Pumpkins are Billy Corgan, James Iha, D'arcy and Jimmy Chamberlin" or whatever?

How can these people give any sort of good description if they only heard one guitar track and one drum track with no vocals.

Does this mean they are recording in LA or mixing there ?

if the songs are still that barren they can't possibly have an album out by january.
especially if Roy is producing i thought that guy liked to put one million guitar tracks on each song.

what the fuck ?

I record all the guitars for my band, the singer does all my backing vocals on the recordings etc.

Convenience, mostly.

Does this make me any less of a backing vocalist, or our rhythm guitarist any less of a guitarist?

There's an interview with Billy that talks about how when he was doubletracking the guitars on Fuck You, he bent the neck a bit at the end... and then perfectly doubled it on the next take.

It's often advantageous to pick one player and get them to do all their parts, and the parts of anyone else who they can do. Take Metallica for instance: before St Anger, James did all the rhythm guitars, while Kirk did most of the leads.

Maybe Billy's waiting on James, and recording his and Jimmy's parts until a confirmation comes.

'intelligence of Machina'

Oh, right.

Well that's not bad news.

Machina "intelligence" (how pretentious) combined with an updated MCIS-like production would be nice. I was not fond of Machina's extremely loud drowned out kind of feel. They should've made it sound like the Machina live show or some of their Machina b-sides. That would have been ace.
