Billy is Insufferable With His New Pod

I love the guy, but it's a total therapy session with Billy as the main character. He doesn't do it with older guests e.g. Geene, Sharon. This Wolfgang interview tho. First 15 minutes is all Billy talking about his experiences with his dad. No interaction/ questions for the guest. Just ME ME ME. IDK... Kinda award. Kids trying to be his own person. Let him justify it.

When is he not insufferable? Shocked James has lasted 7 years with him lol. Jimmy is actually Billy's friend, maybe one of his few real ones, so that's less surprising.

He has this big chip on his shoulder that he wants to show everybody that he was right about making the kind of music he did in the 90s when no one else did, and that people said his voice is shit but is popular. Also he loves to think he is a super celebrity and is a really cool guy for being able to hang out with people like Joe Rogan and other celebrations. It's like he was bullied as a kid and now he has to prove to the world he has big balls.

My favorite part of the Wolfgang interview was when Billy compulsively flexed that Eddie told him he was a good guitar player.

Wolfgang and Eddie are both infinitely better players than him and don't have any reason to care. Also, Eddie was probably just being nice.

Making shitty music doesn’t mean you’re not a good guitarist if we’re just speaking ability to play stuff. Yngwie Malmsteen makes terrible music and he would mop the floor with Billy in terms of technical skill.

Yeah, Wolfgang can literally play "Eruption" note for note like his Dad with all of the phrasing, technical perfection, and rhythmic nuance that his father had.

Also, regardless of whether you find his music innovative, he plays with excellent time, phrasing, technical excellence, and consistency like a real musician....all of which Billy is sorely lacking in a live context.

I do agree, however, that Billy in the studio has been a legitimate innovator and genius with his songwriting and studio OCD. But this is a separate measure than pure musicianship and guitar ability which Wolfgang and Eddie both blow Billy out of the water with.

Everyone is old and just wants to live life instead of relitigating petty bullshit. Even if Corgan invited Malkmus or Gordon on a podcast, fans would be waiting for them to hash out shit Gordon offhandedly said about Corgan in some autobiography 20 years ago or the comments Corgan made about "Range Life," only to listen to these people have a conversation about raising children or relating funny fan interactions they've had on tour. Absolutely nothing Netphorian would happen.

But my guess is Gene Simmons talking about how he played a show in 1976 with an onion on his belt, as was the style at the time, and Corgan saying something like "yeah, we do onions, even when the culture tells us that everyone has to do turnips, we do onions, by the way I like that song you did" and Gene Simmons going "yeah thanks, we were on drugs when we made it, but I'm old and I don't do drugs anymore."

I know Kim a little bit and she's a bit of an asshole. like entitled rich lady kind of shit. Billy's not wrong in his dislike of her, as in he's not the only person that finds her insufferable.

The only time the real kim sort of showed her true colors is when she publicly said lana del ray should kill herself, and of course she really didn't get a lot of flack for that, being royalty and all.

I don't know how a lot of these other rockers get away with it and Billy get's the narcissist tag, but a lot of these musicians are just as crazy and head up their asses as him. He's like the 90s alt rock scapegoat. always has been.

Oh I totally think that Kim was wrong with the comment about Billy and am sure she's just as insufferable as he is. I just think it would be good a good listen to hear them hash their differences out.

As for Malkmus, I love Pavement just as much as I love SP, so to hear them talk would be must-listen, especially as I think the hatred for each other goes pretty deep. Maybe not so much for Malkmus these days, but Billy seems like he still harbors ill will towards them.

And also because why would it be worth anyone's time and energy to behave any differently from that?

Malkmus is in a band right now with Matt Sweeney. The Hard Quartet. They're quite good.
