Default Kenny Aronoff kinda ruins the Adore aesthetic imo

like -- he's clearly a very good drummer, JC speaks highly of him, no issues musically

but the aesthetic of the record/tour is this very delicate, dark beautiful goth d'arcy topless sorta thing. and then you have aronoff back there with his swim goggles and crazy snare attack and neon shirt and shit and it kinda breaks the vibe for me

Aronoff seems like a nice guy and all, but I have never liked his drumming. He is so hamfisted and a lot like Mikey bambam.

Yeah kinda agree. Nice guy but kinda douchey fashion wise. He has no dynamic to his playing at all. Just smashes the snare all the time.

i highly highly disagree with the concept of this thread and my favorite album is adore… kenny was a really good drummer for them and his bicyclist aesthetic is in the same vein as “the horses of adore”

Can’t believe Matt Walker left the band before Adore to do that stupid Cupcakes shit. Wasn’t even very good.

Run of the mill sessionman with strong Joe Satriani aesthetics, not ideal.

Matt was the perfect choice, too bad he had to go on a wild goose chase with Cupcakes (lol)

Yeah he's absolutely Joe Satrianiesque and I would also add peak doucheyness Bono.

Definitely got the douche chills often from Kenny but it's not his fault. He just did his thing and didn't try to play like someone he's not and for that I respect him.

At least him and Mike Garson, along with Corgan, made up a very lustrous trio onstage. It was a pretty good effect, those three shining bald heads bopping as they all collectively make the sound of a catastrophic samba band with cannonball drums and the last action hero on piano.

I also think Kenny rules. Those Adore shows, the three percussionists were completely in the background. Didn't detract from anything at the time IMO, as someone who went to a show.

Kenny is one of the most beloved musicians in the world.

This is a fascinating interview he did with Bob Lefsetz. Talks all about his history in how he got started with drumming and some crazy stories about his days with Mellencamp. Worth a listen alone for his great stories.

Cupcakes thing always seemed like a cover for the fact that he got booted, and Corgan later confirmed that in the Confessions. I did like that Cupcakes album, although it's probably been well over twenty years since I listened to it.

Matt had done a very admirable job filling in, and now, out of nowhere, I was turning on him for a situation he had no part of (we had even gone so far as to ask him to be a part of the band, figuring at this point Jimmy really wasn’t coming back)…everything that Matt did was suddenly “wrong” in my eyes, and like someone who wants to break up with somebody but doesn’t have the courage to just say ‘I’m done’, I made the situation so miserable for him and me that it became a certain inevitability that he would go…he truly did his best, but I had already made up my heart…and so, within just a few days, maybe a week of starting in L.A., Matt was on a plane back to Chicago…

the proverbial sore thumb doing the sticking out in the adore era, i think we can all agree, was garson. he was like some kind of musical hijacker, things would be going just fine and then he'd suddenly veer the whole band into this ridiculous territory and completely take us out of whatever zone we were in
