hummer: someone who doesn't know music theory, but plays by ear.

this selfawareness (in the song title) was little things are what made billy a king to me.
(I"m not even sure that others know this meaning behind th word - does everyone assume he titled the song after the truck???? IIRC it only became a household known vehicle in the late 90's)

It really sounds like a very non-Billy Corgan thing to say, tbh. How do you know he used the word in that context?

That's the guy who put a Kranky records sticker on his most famous guitar apparently unaware it was a Chicago record label.

life is a bummer when you are humming to other people's song instead of bleeding in your own fucking light

but perhaps i'm wrong and big bruce did in fact cram a song about the terrible woes of not knowing music theory right after the song about committing suicide and right before the songs addressed directly to his abusive parents and estranged lover

it's not litterally about 'not knowing music theory', but how you get by by faking it.

On February 5th, 2000, Smashing Pumpkins played a show in Portland, Oregon in which they opened up the floor for a Q & A session. One fan asked, “Why do you have a song called ‘Hummer?’” Billy Corgan responded:

"Ever since I wrote that song I’ve heard many definitions for the word hummer. I’ve heard that there’s a car called a Hummer, I heard that Monica gave Bill a hummer in the White House, but quite honestly in my innocent youth, I imagined it being someone who just walked around humming a song to himself."

I had no idea that "Honk if you hate people" sticker was for Kranky records, and I think thats neat. SP + Stars of the Lid make it happen.

SP weren't connoisseurs of music. James was into The Eagles and Gram Parsons, not Labradford and Stars of the Lid lol.

Billy probably found the sticker somewhere in Chicago and liked what the sticker said. He had no idea what Kranky was.
