The Terror was good and Embryonic was pretty interesting if not a bit overcrowded. I can't remember which one came before that it all starts to bleed together after a bit with that band.

Yes, completely different from the rest of their discography. They pretty much reinvent themselves every decade.

Kozelek's last two albums have been weaker, but he otherwise has a two decade career of stellar albums

No, I just got really burnt-out on them a few years ago after listening to Picaresque/Hazards/Crane Wife and then that folk album was kinda boring.

Why are they full of shit? Are you talking about lyrical in-authenticity?

i dunno if i'd call it inauthenticity but colin melloy just has this encyclopedic approach to songwriting it can't be about just one concept it has to contain footnotes and a subheading...it's just kind of awkward sometimes. it really is like a history professor writing songs and while that's good sometimes, other times it just gets overwhelming and annoying.

also they are one of the more boring bands live, they didn't actually start to be entertaining until 16 military wives and then the chanty song which felt more like i was back in sing-a-longs in grade school rather than at a rock show. everybody else that was into the band though was SO INTO IT

16 military wives is one dope ass track though and the island/come and see/etc from the crane wife is one hell of an epic track

I understand what you are saying, but if every songwriter wrote the same way, music would be boring as fuck.

The fact that Colin Melloy sounds like an English Professor writing sea shanties is what makes them unique and even necessary.
