29. Starship - Sara (1985)
The soaring vocal melodies of this song are best when he sings "No time is a good time for goodbyes," and "I'll never find another girl like you." And I'm pretty sure that instrument coming in it at 0:08 is the same one that can be heard in "What's Love Got to Do With It" and "Too Late for Goodbyes". |

28. Thomas Dolby - She Blinded Me with Science (1982)
Good heavens Miss Sakamoto, here we have the pinnacle of the nerd-rock genre, a song that is basically poetry in motion. Great descending synthesizer fill at 0:23. And I appreciate the effort of the parrot-like old professor who repeats everything that's just been said, just in case we didn't hear it the first time. Highlight: The "she blinded me with science" at 3:25 is probably Dolby's most affecting. |

27. David Bowie - As the World Falls Down (1986)
Be careful that this powerfully hypnotic tune doesn't put you in a trance, thereby distracting you from your true mission. |

26. Billy Joel - Piano Man (1973)
Joel takes us on a tour of this smoky hangout joint, stopping to give character sketches of many of the establishment's regulars, such as: the old man with his tonic and gin, John at the bar, Paul the real-estate novelist, Davey from the Navy, and the waitress with an interest in politics. They're all "sharing a drink they call loneliness/But it's better than drinkin' alone." That's cool that they let the waitress drink on the job. |

25. Spandau Ballet - True (1983)
Featuring great guitarwork, a perfect saxophone solo, and pensive lyrics, I know at least one thing is true...this song deserves its high placement. The opening vocal line guarantees this single's legendary standing. Lyrical highlight: "Always slipping from my hands/Sand's a time of its own" |

24. George Benson - The Greatest Love of All (1977)
The piano part gives this piece its timeless quality, and the lyrics truly shine. Some words of wisdom to live by: "Everybody's searching for a hero/People need someone to look up to/I never found anyone to fulfill my needs/A lonely place to be/So I learned to depend on me" and "The greatest love of all/Is easy to achieve/Learning to love yourself/Is the greatest love of all." |

23. Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody (1975)
I'm a sucker for epics, and this one might just be the queen of them all. Highlight: "Mama, ooh/I don't want to die/I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all"...(guitar solo) |

22. U2 - Where the Streets Have No Name (1987)
Organ and the ultimate Edge guitar riff introduce this song in which we don't hear Bono's lyrics until nearly two minutes in. But, the wait is worth it, as he sings about "tear[ing] down the walls that hold [him] inside" and wanting "to take shelter from the poison rain." Truly inspiring. |

21. Level 42 - Something about You (1985)
Not only is there something about you...there is something about this song. The prominent bass line hooks you in right away, and even the very first word, "Howwwwww" is immediately captivating. Then you have lyrical gems such as "But making mistakes is part of life's imperfections/Born of the years/Is it so wrong to be human after all?" But my favorite part of all is how the high voice fades in at the start of the chorus. |

i'll politely decline joining your indulgence in "because the night", but i will consider performing some sort of witch-dance around the room to "paint it black"

20. Peter Gabriel Sledgehammer (1986)
In case you didn't realize, most of the lyrics are just a long list of as many sexual innuendos as Gabriel can think of. Highlight: The wind-like instrumentation starting at 3:17. |

19. Cutting Crew - (I Just) Died in Your Arms (1986)
Only in hindsight does he realize that he "should have walked away." Highlight: The guitar solo (starts at 3:08). |

18. Tears For Fears - Everybody Wants To Rule the World (1985)
In the beginning, an Edge-like guitar pattern floats in, soon giving way to a two-chord keyboard progression that is beautiful in its simplicity. A rather serious song about the struggle for control...and power. |

17. Elton John Rocket Man (I Think Its Going To Be a Long, Long Time) (1972)
The best parts are when Elton's voice suddenly ascends into its upper register, as in "high" (0:16), "timeless" (0:44), and "oh no no no" (1:06). |

16. Vangelis Chariots of Fire (1981)
Also known as "Titles". The highest-placing instrumental on the list. Makes me want to videotape myself running and then play it back in slow motion. |

15. ABBA - Dancing Queen (1976)
The entire backing track is pure ear candy, especially the cascading piano lines. Highlight: Swirling synthesizer riff as seen at 2:18. |
