I lived 3 blocks from the white house the year leading up to Jan 6. Cops all year would walk around downtown and harass and arrest anybody they thought was BLM. Went on all summer. Then Trump brought in 5000 feds (from Bureau of prisons) and they just plain started beating the shit out of people. If you weren't white and you were on the street downtown after dark they would grab you and throw you in a van.

Over and over between Nov 4 and Jan 6 Proud Boys and a bunch of other similar groups would roll into town and attack Metro cops!! They'd march around downtown at night and literally pick fights with cops and anybody they thought was BLM (mainly POC). At one point late in 2020 dozens of Proud Boys marched at night through Adams Morgan, which is a neighborhood of bars and restaurants miles from the capitol. There were no BLM members there, but they beat up a bunch of black people anyway. But of course the Metro cops never arrested any of them.

on Jan 6 after a year of feds and cops attacking BLM and anybody else in their way there was suddenly no cops, no feds, nothing on the streets. The city was empty, despite the thousands of Extremist right wingers foaming at the mouth down near the Mall.

Everyone I knew in DC had suggested I get out of the city on Jan 5. Some of my friends left town. Everyone here knew something bad was going to happen.
