yeah, pretty much, though to me it leans more on the "good" side of things versus a lot of what came after

tfe is a child only a mother could love. or, in this case, a fan of the mother. it kind of suffers from the same problems as every one of billy's electronic endeavors - it seems to assume the fact that it's different is gonna be enough to make it worhtwhile, so it ends up being just very uninspired. also its really telling that based on initial press reaction corgan was like 'fuck this shit, i'm taking the pumpkins name back'. seeing it unfold in real time was kinda sad.

It doesn’t go far enough into exploring the possibilities of electronic music to justify its existence as an electronic album. the songwriting isn’t quite good or interesting enough to excuse its failure as an electronic album
It’s ok. It sounds very... Rock songwriter using soft synths because he’s on a train with his laptop and can’t record guitars right now. |

I'm very conflicted because I remember always really digging the album, but I just gave it a listen for the first time in years and here's how it shook out:
All Things Change: okay. Sure. Mina Loy: I immediately forget how this goes or what I thought CameraEye: always had this on regular rotation. Cool, coolcoolcoolcoolcool nodoubtnodoubtnodoubt To Love Somebody: okay you're losing me, Fitzwilliam; this is trash A100: I remember this got me pumped about the album coming out. Good shit DIA: turned it off halfway through this, could not continue Anyway I voted fire, good night everybody |

"All Things Change" – weak. Annoying and repetitive.
"Mina Loy (M.O.H.)" – I love it, it should've been the first single. Apocalyptic, dramatic with good lyrics. "The CameraEye" – very out of the box for Billy, it sounds very fresh and I wish he explored this style more. "ToLoveSomebody" – I love this cover, I was already into that song before cause Janis Joplin had covered it as well. I live what Billy does with his as nd Robert Smith's vocals here. "A100" – ok, a bit repetitive again, but very upbeat. "DIA" – I kinda don't like the prediction here, it sounds very compressed, but I like the song. "Now (And Then)" – I used to think this was a boring song until I heard Billy singing it acoustic on the radio and it blew me away. "I'm Ready" – very annoying! The worst thing is that everybody told Billy that was a weak song but he chose to keep it on the album anyway. "Walking Shade" – The most Pumpkins song out of the album. Good song. "Sorrows (In Blue)" – I love the guitars on this one, very shoegaze! "Pretty, Pretty Star" – my favourite. "Can I ask / where you are / tonight / do you know / where I am / right now" "Strayz" – this one has also grown on me. |
