I mean why didn’t Darcy stop him from releasing perfect? That was when the blandness really started to settle in. Then it was a single? Talk about boring/goes nowhere/sounds generic for the time.

Then glass and the ghost children? She didn’t stop him from playing that yawn fest on the otherwise perfect arising tour.

Perfect was fine, what would you have picked for a single?

Ava Adore aged worse.

It's a pity singles don't have b-sides anymore. It used to be that you'd get two or three other non album songs with the main song, and it gave you an idea of what the band were doing.

I know we have the other two album songs to judge Beguiled against, but I feel if there was something like the way Today had Hello Kitty Kat and then Obscured, you'd have a better idea of what the whole thing was going to sound like.

No it didn’t. At least it aged, perfect is forgotten.

Other single? Pug. Or Jesus Christ maybe leave LMGTW on the record and release it as a single. Why didn’t Darcy give him that advice? Record would have likely sold better and we wouldn’t have had to deal with his constant melt downs in interviews.

I love perfect. LMGTWTY is cheesy as hell. The only good version of that song is the demo version.

Perfect is a good song. D’Arcy giving him good advice seems pretty obvious by now, especially given the fact that he admitted he listened to her about music.

I can kind of see D'arcy being in the band for at least some of Shiny. There is no way for me to reconcile the idea of her presence in a band that would put out CYR.

Yeah but if they were CD b-sides we'd have them now, and they help contextualise Beguiled a bit more.

As it is, the two podcast tracks are serving that purpose.

i think one of the biggest revelations about Billy & her dynamic was when he talked about her actually informing his singing style

I guess it's also worth noting that Filter's only truly great album was mainly about & informed by D'arcy

She had a good bullshit meter back in the day but that also didnít stop him from releasing some bullshit back then either. His ability to be corny and whimsical seemed to entertain our young innocent minds back then but if weíre being honest that shit would hit us different if released today. For example- Iíve always love by starlight, but heard it the other day and was somewhat removed from my nostalgic fandom and it hit me how cheesy that song is. Same with lily, love, Annie dog, etc.

God damn Annie dog. Remember having to sit through that one live?
Ö.hmmÖwhat the fuck?

* Shits on darcy
* Claims By Starlight is only special b/c they heard it when they were teens
*proposes Love is cheesy and they just didnít know it b.c they were innocent
*claims their mind was innocent, once

By Starlight would be the best song Billy released in the last 20 years. And it’s probably not even in my top 20 MCIS songs.

lot of bad takes being tossed around "willy [patrick corgan] nilly" in this thread

some of you dipshits need to just stop talking about anything this band/brand/lonelyman released before the 21st century and save yourself the residual embarassing

hell i'm properly red-faced just reading all this!

Play about half of Mellon collie for one of your non fan friends and youíll hear this ó ďthis is cheesy garbage.Ē

Iíve had that happen several times. And said people have good taste.

MCIS is a very highly regarded album, and rightly so. What are you even talking about dude?

Yeah, Iím SP world. Go to any now playing facegroup book and you see pole pole posting about how Pisces is a riot was really their best material and they lost their fans at Mellon collie. I see Mellon collie get shit on daily. Hell it happened today at stereogum. Someone said their ship sailed in 1994 and MCIS was LOL.

And MCIS is my favorite album, ever. But ya know it has its duds.

I've always thought MCIS was sort of written from a teenage mindset, generally. Like it's a bit more obvious on stuff like Here Is No Why, Lily, and 1979, but I'd say it's throughout. I don't think this is some record of Billy's emotional maturity at the time; it's just the... I hesitate to use the word "story," but I think it's the feeling he wanted to capture with the whole album. Those big, bombastic, confusing emotions we all had at the time.

So I can see how, if The 'Noid here first heard the album as a teen, the lyrics resonated with him and he didn't hear cheese; he heard the sort of thing that sounded true to him. And now as an adult, it no longer resonates. I mean, that's my story. Where we differ is he now sees that, yes, mild cheesiness as embarrassing and unintentional, and I instead find it deliberate and wistful and sweet.

At any rate, yeah, Annie Dog whips ass and I can't rationalize away anyone's utterly wrong dislike of it.

MCIS is easily one of the best and most original albums I’ve ever heard and I will die on that hill. It has so many different styles on it but they all are pulled off. If you think it’s themes are only “unique to teenagers” I imagine you’re neurotypical. As someone who’s autistic with severe OCD and depression it still resonates with me heavily at 30.

As I get older I appreciate MCIS more. Most recently its BC's lyrical maturity, which he seems to have completely lost. He wrote thirty-three when he was what, 27? At 55 he is writing 'return the faith' ad nauseum.
