If mammary glands are evolutionarily modified sweat glands and yet many mammals nurse their young but cannot sweat, how the fuck did that happen?

Evolutionarily is one of those words no one says out loud

I've definitely said it out loud, like, 20 times
usually in the form of "if, evolutionarily speaking, blah blah blah, why does [this weird thing] happen?" like if, evolutionarily speaking, individuals want to pass on their genes and that includes others with their genes [or potentially with their genes], why do animals sometimes adopt animals of entirely different species and raise them? especially when there's weird combos involved like mammals and reptiles? |

like most things like that in evo psychology, the answer was "it's just a mistake. it's better to end up feeding offspring that isn't yours than chance thinking one that is isn't and not feeding it"
which is not really a great answer |

As dumb as some animals are, I have a hard time believing a cow is mistaking a chicken as one of its babies, or whatever.

you gotta step out of your sapio-centric framework and realize that the cow may not truly grasp what "mine" means or what a baby is. like reprise said, just going moment-to-moment acting on instinct because in its subconscious (so to speak) it understands that it is meant to protect the small thing that stays nearby

It's a nicer theory than thinking about the animals that mate and then eat those same babies. Lotta sense there!

Would you rather never have to sweat again or have the ability to shoot bees from your hands?

RBG when are you going to stop needing to solicit answers to these imponderables and have the moral fiber to form your own opinions and make your own choices
Isn't it time you grew up a little |

One thing to consider — yes, I'm playing into RBG's hands — is that we're likely all picturing the bees as a weapon, like you shoot them at your opponents and they sting the hell out of the target of your choosing. But the question doesn't say that. For all we know, the bees come out of your hands and just drift off to the nearest flower. And then you're just... either creating life and the bees are your children and you're just loosing them upon the world without caring for them or knowing how they turn out when they grow up, or there's some kind of wormhole situation going on and the bees already exist somewhere else, and they get teleported into your hands when called upon, and you're potentially stranding them so far away from their hives that you're essentially just killing them. Really, if you're creating them, too, you're just killing them even if they don't sting your enemies.
I guess another thing to consider is that if you choose "never have to sweat again," you could be teleported out into the unimaginable coldness of space, where you suffocate and possibly even come to life again, over and over, for eternity. Or like some guy could just come up and shoot you in the head the second you choose it. If RBG would just spend more of his free time considering how carefully you'd need to word a request to a genie who's just waiting to turn your life into a fantastic punchline, maybe he wouldn't have to beg us to tell him what to think. |
