yeah, I always kinda thought so.

I don't really buy it as a suicide song. It's more along a 'lovin my own sadness' vibe tbh, not to cast shadow on it tho. I think it's more like, at the end of all things, I just want to be at peace with my dad.

I always wondered about BC and his dad's relationship. He talks very little about it. The dynamic of being severely abused by him as a child, and then achieving the ultimate success his dad had always dreamed of for himself, seems like it could be the ultimate power trip. But Billy never actually spoke of how it changed their relationship at all.

I think on Rogan he said that his dad would say stuff like "hey ya know if ya need me to write a few songs for your new record...". Like total typical toolbag shit from an old abuser.

Billy is a pretty vitriolic person but at least outwardly it seems like his father is the one person who he never dared fucking with. It's all pretty sad. Families are sad.

was his dad the abuser? I remember it was the step-moms/grandparents that his dad abandoned him with that were abusive. his father was just passive to the abuse.

Would his mother been in a hospital dying when he wrote this? I've long had this whole thing in my head about this being the Billies sitting at her bedside saying their goodbyes, but I just realized this came out a few months before she passed and I'm wondering if I need to kiss that reading goodbye.

I always understood this verse as a metaphor for skyscrapers against skies on cloudy days.

Sufjan's Carrie & Lowell (the album) reminds me a bit of this song, in the sense that it's about trying to make sense of and bring resolution to a parental relationship that you will never really have the key to. You will never understand why, you will never bridge that gap no matter how much you yearn for it, and you need to find your own way to write your last song about it and move on.

"borrowing liberally frmo the 7th chordal frames of 'Here is no Why'" = "oh yeah that A chord I also used on my other song"

is there anyone in the past 30 years of "modern rock" who has used the word "grandiose" even a quarter as much as our beloved Billy C?

wait hold on

i never saw this as a suicide song

i always thought it could be a love song like "no more songs dedicated to you we're done"

+++++++++

but with the inclusion of his dad it could double-up as "no more songs about relationships with my dad i've put that to bed now"

absolutely never even considered this whole "oh no the last song i'mma kill mahself" angle

oh shit so i forgot my point - is "metal fingers clutching dirty sheets" possibly related to "sally's in the stirrups claiming her destiny"

????

you can't argue the imagery

Yes, the "suicide song" interpretation is idiotic (last song durr hurr), and there's no indication that Bill's dad has anything to do with the song's inspiration or meaning. I read it similarly to how you've described.
