Default It is criminal that MTV lost the tapes to Brixton 96

best show they ever played, hands down. last pajama set ever. last jellybelly with jimmy. ruby [with badass outro] > porcelina > bodies. fairly well-developed silverfuck > farewell + goodnight. last take me down ever. last soma until the arising tour. last cupid with james.

this gig showcases SP at their most wistful and their most aggressive.

I have the full show AMT if you want that. Quality is actually half-way decent.

(Edit n/m - you have that re: our discussion years ago here: http://forums.netphoria.org/showthre...+hybrid&page=2)

Wow. That sucks.

Though, I think that the January 1997 Vancouver show is the best they did. IMO, it has the best traditional-style Porcelina (Porcelina -> Rocket) (the final Metro show Porcelina is amazing, but is its own thing), Siva with that amazing psychedelic middle section (and Billy goes "oops!"), and Silverfuck jam (super brutal and then the ending is sublime and gives closure). The Cherub Rock ending is awesome, cool WBFTT ending, one of the better Ruby outro solos.

Their improv solo melodies at this show were flawless to the point that it doesn't sound like it's improv, and it's the only MCIS show I'm aware of where they pulled that off.

Can it really be the best show without Jimmy?

No “best” show without the original four can count as an absolute best show.

When was their last gig? Arising tour?

I thought about that. But for me, yeah, it is. It comes down to the music. And Matt is coping Jimmy's drum parts, so Jimmy is there in spirit.

I think the drums in that show are a bit too cymbal splashy, and I wonder if it's just the recording, but they're still good.

Think so. This site says D'arcy left September 1999: https://www.grunge.com/207315/the-re...hing-pumpkins/

Arising wrapped-up April 1999: http://www.spfc.org/tours/tour.html?tn_id=1

SP didn't play again until October 1999: http://www.spfc.org/tours/date.html?year=1999

I've never understood why they don't just put out the God damned soundboard recording they've had for 24 years.
Leads me to believe, perhaps they actually don't?
Or is Billy so Billy that selling shows on nugs, just like Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam, is somehow beneath him?
Copperpot used to have a great full video of the show, taped from a lone camera on a tripod and it had mostly good audio. Disappeared though.

I feel like Brixton was the last sort of innocent MCIS show, because when it came back to America, it was much more dark and well, we know what happened.

I was always partial to the Berlin Bullet bootleg because of the transitions between some of the songs and a tremendous Muzzle. You can also hear Jimmy's drumming more from aud recordings.

Related question.
What is the best Machina era show and recording?

Related question: At which tour did they play the best Silverfuck?
Just listening to an early 1997 recording and it's insane.

I think Matt Cosmo Walker's silverfucks from December 1996 to the end of the tour in 97 are some of the best.
Of course GM Place 1997 is THE silverfuck.

I think it was alt.music.smashingpumpkins. but in the days of the MCIS tour, people would track silverfuck. They'd add in his ad-libs and map out how the song went. So you'd see a lot of this:

Started with Silverfuck II into silverfuck I then into silverfuck III.
Basically tracking the variations of this strange beautiful 30 minute song and how it evolved each night.

Matt was the only drummer, aside from Jimmy, to hold his own. He seems to be the only one whom didn't miss a beat.
And the dude hit harder than acid. Watch that proshot performance in the summer of 97. The guy hits so hard, especially during 1979, the stage shakes.

The show from Denmark 2000.10.27 is fantastic quality. That whole tour was magical, they reworked so many songs including Today which sounds stunning with the piano.

Yes the Silverfuck from Vancouver is UNREAL. The Bury Me tag into the solo phase....doesn't really get better than that. How was it possible this band could transition into weird shit about some rando called Mary being a stupid girl then into this section of pure heaven. Was there any video for this show?

Look no one is as good as Jimmy but Matt can play, thank fuck they didn't ask Brad Wilk or Tommy Clufetos back then.

Departure time always and arrival time never.

For me one of the quintessential machina shows is 9.24.2000 https://archive.org/details/tsp2000-09-24.sbd.flac16

I mean look at this: disarm, tonight, try, porcelina, I of the mourning, this time, blank page, cherub

It's like damn they swung for it

+++++ to everything in the first paragraph

I never thought about that, it's quite a beautiful way to describe the arc of the tour. Did not know it was the last of the european leg. Then they played Australian shows, and I think that got kinda dark for JC/Melvoin. And then america -- yeah, those feels so dark knowing how they ended - plus the set got tighter/more brutal/faster/more streamlined

They had so many versions of the songs on the machina tour. Snail was my personal favorite from that time.
https://archive.org/details/tsp2000-...0-05-14t17.shn

There was also an abundance of complete soundboard or radio broadcast recordings from this time.

watching that amazing ruby again

it looks like the crowd in the pit during the outro isn't even moving...they're in a trance from the sheer brilliance of rawk coming from the stage

god imagine going to that concert, see bill in his pjs, watching a pristine, peak MCIS show

Walker was a great addition to the band, and would have really been the only chance they had of moving forward with a consistent lineup without Jimmy. You can tell they have no clue how lucky they were to get a drummer who fit in with the band so seamlessly in terms of image, sound, and ability. It's been a minute since I read the Confessions (the last time Billy wrote anything which I consider to be even remotely balanced), but I remember Billy pretty much said the same thing. After Matt left/was fired, the revolving door of drummers and the drum machine just made the Adore sessions that much more frustrating and difficult.
