it IS about stalking. You just had that revelation? funny thing though, when i was a teen and young adult i did think it was a beautiful song. that was back when girls didn't give me the time of the day cause i was a fucking creep. I was kinda stalky back then. Not the dangerous type but stalky all the same. |

Considering Sting has spent the past 30 years telling people it's a song about stalking that won't be a very big revelation.

it seems spoony just hasn't discovered the "music" section of a message board, imagine the things he might learn then!

"I woke up in the middle of the night with that line in my head, sat down at the piano and had written it in half an hour. The tune itself is generic, an aggregate of hundreds of others, but the words are interesting. It sounds like a comforting love song. I didn't realize at the time how sinister it is. I think I was thinking of Big Brother, surveillance and control." ~ Sting
"The song has the standard structure of a pop ballad, but there is no harmonic development after the middle eight, no release of emotions or change in the point of view of the protagonist. He is trapped in his circular obsessions. Of course, I wasn't aware of any of this. I thought I was just writing a hit song, and indeed it became one of the songs that defined the '80s, and by accident the perfect sound track for Reagan's Star Wars fantasy of control and seduction." ~ Sting "I think the song is very, very sinister and ugly and people have actually misinterpreted it as being a gentle little love song, when it's quite the opposite." ~ Sting "One couple told me 'Oh we love that song; it was the main song played at our wedding!' I thought, Well, good luck." ~ Sting "I think it's a nasty little song, really rather evil. It's about jealousy and surveillance and ownership." ~ Sting "I think the ambiguity is intrinsic in the song however you treat it because the words are so sadistic. On one level, it's a nice long song with the classic relative minor chords, and underneath there's this distasteful character talking about watching every move. I enjoy that ambiguity. I watched Andy Gibb singing it with some girl on TV a couple of weeks ago, very loving, and totally misinterpreting it. I could still hear the words, which aren't about love at all. I pissed myself laughing." ~ Sting do you need more, dumbass? also wrong board |

these songs aren't hard, it's not like morrissey where it could be about being gay or allegorically about how horrible thatcher is/was or both (Still Ill)

Every line is quotable I feel like Morrissey writes in brilliant individual lines that kind of come together to form a cohesive story |

The Police are the sound people think of when they think of the 80's and that upsets me

They only released three albums in the 1980s with the last one being in 1983: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Police_discography At least they were genuine, good musicians that wrote all their own songs. Shouldn't you be more concerned that there's a good chance that people in the future will think of Katy Perry when they think of THIS decade? Isn't that more disturbing? Yeah but Every Breath You Take is what people think I'm talking about when I say I like 80's music.
