Default Cash Car Star - 10.31.98, More

My digital files are pretty well organized, but there are a few dark recesses of my hard drive that are just horrible. Digging through one such folder tonight, I found a bunch of MPGs that I had downloaded in 2000-2002 era.

Came across a shitty old MPG of the 10/31/98 Cash Car Star which led me here to a far better looking version of that song:

That 15 second shot of Kenny going to town between the 15 and 30 second mark there got me thinking - when was this song written? Sometimes without Jimmy?! I always assumed that a drum part of that weight had to have been a Jimmy written thing... but was that Kenny? Who wrote the drum part for that song?!

Also - anybody else watch that performance live on Fox that night?

i feel like the beat [or proto-beat] was a drum machine thing that billy wrote and recorded a rough demo to. kenny adapted the part for this tour, then jimmy adapted/wrote his part during...arising rehearsals or something

The version on Adore Deluxe is a lot slower, but who knows if that was the original beat or something Matt Walker came up with when he "reimagined" it

I have speculated on this song as it's one of my favorites from the era. I was hoping the Adore reissue would give us clarity on its genesis, but that wasn't the case. Matt Walker's reimagined version sounds like it was sourced from the Machina takes to me.

Also, how the hell did he have a song this good and sat on it for two records?

I was there. I didn't know it was live on FOX. Is there any better quality captures from this show?

i seem to have misplaced my copy, so it's nice to have it again.

*NOTE: the halloween 1998 performance has the fields reversed, so it flutters.
i'll see if i can fix that at some point.

it surprises me people consider this a good song. aside from fun, impressive drumming, what exactly does it have going for it?

the bland, unimaginative guitar riff?
the terrible, inane lyrics?

genuinely curious

It's just a matter of opinion I guess. I think it totally rips. Love the riff and love the lyrics.

it just doesn't fit on adore. obviously.
and machina - I'm glad he wrote new songs.

I find it lame when bands have to recycle old unused songs. glad original SP was above and beyond that. (IIRC it's in the Pisces liner notes that billy mentions starla and the "no recording a song twice" rule? self imposed rule..)

edit:

starla-my friend aneta still say to me that this song should have been on siamese dream. but back again to that no record 2x rule. this was recorded the same time as plume, and was also intended to be a demo, but we needed b-sides for our pretty worthless i am one u.k. single

yeah that's fair, there are plenty of songs i like where someone could mock the lyrics..

not trying to beat a dead horse or mock anyone, but which lyrics in this song do you like?

No worries. I love the entire set save for the "we're an American band for you" bit.

Obviously I have no way of really knowing this, but I think this track is heavily inspired by Billy meeting Marilyn Manson for the first time. That and spending time in LaLaLand. By mid to late 1997 most of Adore was already written. Even though this is considered Adore era, it was very late in the process and possibly why it was reused. With the Oct 1998 debut most of what we know of Adore was over a year old at that point. I think the reason Billy went full on Glass is because Brian went full on Omega. Too bad he didn't follow his own advice and follow through with the concept. All this is just guessing, but the Machina era is very Mansonesque to me.
