Question Question for people who understand cameras

I have a Canon EOS Rebel XT. I am not the original owner and I don't know very much about how an SLR works. A few months ago, I started to notice a weird amount of dust or dirt or something somewhere in the camera. I am accustomed to having little specks show up in photos and move around in the lens once in awhile, but this is many little specks. They only show up when the camera is focused a certain way cause they aren't in every picture I take, but they do appear in the same places when they show up. I have tried doing some internet research but everything I have read basically says dust gets in every camera and is not a problem 99% of the time. Because I have so many specks in my pictures, I am going to assume this is not dust? Or at least not in the lens? Could my mirror be dirty? I was going to spray it with one of those aerosol air blower thingies, but it says to never use it on a camera lens. What should I do!!! Help!!

I'm guessing it can't be the lens because they don't seem to move or rotate, so it must be shit inside my camera? Is there any way to try cleaning this before spending money to let a professional do it?

If it's happening at the same focal length every time it could very well be on the lens, too.

I have nothing else to add.

ok I'm seeing a lot of NEVER TOUCH THE MIRROR WITH ANYTHING. Also, some people say if the spots show up in the picture it is not on the mirror because the mirror flips out of the way when a picture is taken.

they just say that because they don't want johnny two-thumbs bumping around in there and messing everything up. i mean - dust gets in there. dust is touching the mirror.

but anyway - it could be the digital camera just failing in general. my ex had an old 2nd hand model and it started to do the same thing although it didn't look like dust spots it looked like blank digital spots. could be difficult for a beginner to distinguish.

the way that those spots are out of focus does make it look like there's some junk on the lens though

I use lens cleaner with a q-tip. Not the cheap generic q tips because they are cheap and the cotton sheds easily. Kahlo to thread.

Sup. This happens to my cameras all the time, mainly because I work in places with lots of sand and dust. I regularly get the sensor cleaned professionally to remove the particles which are showing up in your shot.

I do have a kit (air and q-tips), and I use it on the cheaper cameras to remove particles, but a full service is about £25 and sometimes I'd prefer to do that than potentially fuck up the camera.

Yeah it's dirt on the sensor, not the lens. It can be cleaned pretty easily on a SLR (you can unscrew the lens to get to it), but it's probably best to get a pro to do it.

to clean the dust on the sensor you will have to lock the mirror up to access it. i bought a kit that came with cleaning solution and a swab that is sized for my sensor. you will need to get a sensor cleaning kit for 1.6x crop cameras (APS-C)

before attempting to clean it, lock the mirror up (not sure how to on your camera,) hold the camera upside down and blast air into using a camera blower thingie. this may dislodge loose dust and have it drop clear.

also, those dark spots will only show up in photos at smaller apertures.
