Default The most underrated 70's arena rock bands thread

Why isn't Foreigner held in the same regard as bands like Aerosmith, KISS or even Journey? They're responsible for a huge chunk of the most anthemic, memorable hits of the 70's and yet they're almost seen as a footnote as far as most rock fans go nowadays.

For those who don't know they're responsible for such rock classics as: Feels Like The First Time, Cold As Ice, Hot Blooded, Double Vision, Head Games, Urgent, Jukebox Hero and I Want To Know What Love is.

You figure with hits like that that they'd be considered one of the seminal rock bands of the era.

Foreigner is not underrated. 1. People remember them and 2. they were not good

you want to hear some cock rock shredding that makes Slash look like a sloppy amateur? 2:10.

Night Ranger

The transcendent chorus to Sister Christian got stuck in my head the entire summer of 2013. It was a great summer

Perhaps not underrated, but almost kind of forgotten and passed over by the new generations. I mean, with their catalogue there's no reason why they shouldn't be held in the same esteem as a group like Aerosmith or even Bon Jovi.

I think a group like Foreigner has way more bullets in their arsenal than a band like Journey, yet Journey can still sell at the big hockey arena's whereas SP couldn't even do it on the Oash tour.

I should clarify that I'm not a big fan or anything, but come on, they have some legendary rad hits.

UFO's pretty rad, but they aped Deep Purple a little too much for my tastes.

ewww...aped Deep Purple? c'monnn... Not with Phil Moog on vocals and Mr. Micheal Schenker on guitar.

Run to Me,

Sister Christian as 2013 summer anthem? Where you living, Indiana? Cool band with some fun songs here and there, but how did the Sister Christian thing happen?

Stillwater...j/k

Actual underrated bands from the 70's would be Grand Funk Railroad, Thin Lizzy, Loggins and Messina, Montrose (w/Sammy Hagar).

and last but not least: Y n T

Good thread fuzz. Great excuse to play the straightforward kick-ass American rock n roll, mofos. Here's Hagar with Ronnie Montrose before anybody knew who either one was.

oh'p, just thought of another:

The Baby's with John Waite. I'm so envious of his unique vocals and they got some amazing songs.

you can like Foreigner if you like, I don't care but I don't think they can be compared to a band like Aerosmith. And it's not that I think Aerosmith is any kind of great band but they actually do have some great songs that aren't entirely fluff, and I've never heard anything from Foreigner that wasn't total bubblegum arena pop

I don't really hear UFO aping Deep Purple, although I am only familiar with UFO with Schenker. But hot fucking damn was this band powerful. I'm not sure how much production fuckery has been worked on the Strangers in the Night live album, but the interplay between the very heavy rhythm guitars sounds way ahead of its time, like a precursor to 90s hard rock.

Billy loves UFO and they were definitely an influence on the Pumpkins

I'd go to bat for Boston. But Foreigner? Come on, fuzzy. Have some standards. What's next, Journey?

Garbage? hope you're talking about the upper tier of these bands; say Boston, Aero, 4uhner, Styx.

There's nothing garbage about the Steve Miller Band and technically speaking Rush was an underrated arena rock band through the 70's. Also, Gamma started in '78 and that was Ronnie Montrose's project after his namesake band and if you're any kind of guitar fan you must hear Voyager.

Here's the best pop-rock song of the 70's:

FUCK YES! This thread would be a lot more accurate if I started it off with them as opposed to Foreigner.

I've been revisiting some of their shit, and while it's obviously iconic, it doesn't quite stand the test of time. Great band to see live though, even though it's basically a hired-hand show... But at least unlike B0lly's crew, they put on a good show

Hendrix had such an influence, there's no shortage of lead-riff-laden guitar work all over the 70's. There's a fair amount of crossover too with the muso's. Gamma and Robin Trower had the same singer. You mention Deep Purple and it brings to mind Rainbow and Dio. Then there's the Schenker brothers with UFO and the Scorpions.
