here's an exhaustive (to my knowledge) list of every drummer that played under the name "(the) Smashing Pumpkins" live or studio.
Matt Walker Kenny Aronoff (Adore tour) Matt Walker (MCIS Tour, "To Sheila", "Ava Adore", "Daphne Descends", "Tear", "The Tale of Dusty and Pistol Pete", "Annie-Dog", and "Behold! The Night Mare") Joey Waronker ("Perfect", "Once Upon a Time", "Pug") Matt Cameron ("For Martha") Mike Burns ("Oceania") |

There's also Brad Wood (adore-era)
idk if you want to in-clude programmers who did electronic drums but that would in-clude Bon Harris too |

If someone played drums in Smashing Pumpkins but no-one was around to hear them, did they really play drums at all?

the vancouver boot alone is enough to show that billy should have tried harder to get matt walker to replace jimmy the 2nd time. i guess matt had other shit going on, or asked for a lot of money to have to deal with billy.

kenny's an awesome drummer, definitely. i think he sounds great on black oblivion/firewall and he played on this buddy rich tribute once and it was amazing. but man he did not sound great with with pumpkins, even embellished with the two other percussionist. maybe i'm not hearing the right boots.
perhaps billy was biased in hiring him because they were both bald. |

Damn. What tremendous talent. I'm not going to fault Mike for effort, but he just isn't in the same league as any of the SP1 drummers. He sounds extremely amateur in comparison to any of these guys and against his contemporaries.
I wonder how quickly, if ever, Corgan realized he made a mistake. I don't know if Corgan's lack of professionalism will allow him to take jabs at Mike or if his "I can do no wrong" part of his personality will prevent him from admitting to making a poor choice. Or... maybe it's like he said when he hired Mike that he thought he could grow and had a lot of potential. He gave Mike plenty of time with the band to improve. And he most certainly did, just not to the point where he's as good as Jimmy or the other drummers in this thread. While that is sensible, I don't want to give Billy that much credit. |
