Metal and punk have been in bed since thrash has been a thing. Some early death metal bands were like, "oh, I like how these punks are singing about how society sucks and shit, let's do that instead of singing about Satan and witches and fantasy shit." And early black metal artists clearly were listening to gothic rock and post-punk.

In my city, the music scene is also small enough that there isn't really a hard division between "scenes" for genres. A lot of the same people go to metal shows, punk shows, shoegaze and psychedelic shows, jangly indie shit, noise rock/experimental/completely amusical shit, gothic dance nights, whatever.

I tried to asplain this (albeit nowhere near as well as you) many, many moons ago.

Same here, except the only two choices are country or nothing.

I miss Austin. There's a fairly vibrant local scene that has a little bit of everything about an hour away, but nobody even remotely big plays within 4-5 hours of here, and sometimes they skip this state altogether.

Planning another move, now actually. For my 5th time in 4 years. It might be a while before this one actually happens, though. Fucking virus.

Psychedelic rock, which led to both metal and proto-punk, also borrowed a ton from various indigenous cultures' music. Acid-heads with sitars and "exotic" scales and all that.

And with Ritchie Blackmore having some classical influence in his playing and Judas Priest tearing thr blues out of metal, the way was paved for metal music that borrowed from traditions other than blues, using Romani scales and the like. Or using chromaticism that just kinda sounds dissonant and doesn't follow much established music theory, such as thrash bands did.

The common lineage between punk and metal is pretty hard to ignore. Like, The Doors (along with the Stones and Hendrix) pretty invented sombre psychedelia that wasn't all about sunshine and flowers. "The End," along with Bowie's "After All," are essentially the first gothic rock songs. And miserable psychedelia that acknowledged that being all about sunshine and rainbows during the Vietnam war, racial violence, and the Manson murders pretty much became metal.

even Austin's proper Gothic themed club could only host one post-punk night a week to make any money

In general I think I am just really disinterested in what different scenes "set out to do" or the social dynamics of their subcultures. To me, all that stuff is peripheral to the music, especially compared to big picture social aspects of music, like how the culture behind jazz developed organically over time, or how folk music in the US has a history intertwined with social justice issues. When it comes to things like this rock scene vs. that rock scene, a lot of it comes off as posturing to me, and more concerned with "fashion" than what is happening in the music. It's hard for me to even really consider punk or metalheads as a subculture, because they are subcultures which sprouted up around mostly white dudes who could afford music equipment and wanted to craft a club for themselves

When you read second-wave black metal musicians talking about how they seek to unlearn whatever musical skills they may have because they feel that technical proficiency actually detracts from the ability to convey their desired tones, they almost sound like no-wave musicians bragging about how they've never learnt a single chord and feeling superior to punk because punk still uses the musical structures and elements of broader rock.

I personally also feel that this is all posturing and that artists who take themselves too seriously, either by making technicality the be-all-end-all or treating it as something inherently undesirable, ought to get over themselves.

also I was talking about the music

however I think fashion can be legit Art by itself and punk, like popular music in general (including metal) always incorporates forms of expression outside of strictly sound
