Default Take a song like Clones (We're All) for example...

I suspect it took the band/Billy a relatively short amount of time to produce this song. Simply because it has that we're just farting around, having fun, why the hell not feel. (I could be wrong in production efforts) Never the less, the song has a formula and an instantly catchy guitar hook. My point being, if this song were released fresh for the first time today, it would be a huge hit on the radio, at least I think so. Or at least if a douchey pop band played it verbatim it would likely succeed. One could even argue it's political relevance(cloning), but I'd rather not and wont.

But hey, if this simple, fun loving song that I stumble on once a season doesn't reach the masses, fine, their loss.

Final thought: The Smashing Pumpkins music valleys are other bands musical peaks.

*Sigh* And the "It's a hard knock Life" a la Annie cover, rather sample, got more radio play than Clones.

I think of the Grand Canyon as more of a plateau thing really, but just as well. Semantics schemantics

i always wanted to know who the hell this guy was that wrote this song...doesn't look like i'm gonna find much..

allmusic:
"Interestingly, this song wasn't penned by Cooper. Instead, Roy Thomas Baker discovered the song and urged Cooper to record it for the album."

David Carron
80's Rock God and Hit Songwriter with a sensitive, spiritual side.

Discography:
Riding in the Wind by Gulliver,1979
Clones (Alice Cooper), 1979

A gifted musician and prolific songwriter, David Carron’s best known song "Clones (we’re All)", was recorded by both Alice Cooper in 1980 and by Smashing Pumpkins in 1996. A star himself, David played with the luminaries of the music industry from 1964 until his untimely death in 1985. As lead singer and rhythm guitarist for The Quarry’s, the band played Filmore East and West, The Electric Circus, served as the house band on the free stage at Woodstock and played mainstage with Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix at the Texas International Pop Festival.

David worked with Al Kooper and Phil Gladston at the Record Plant in Manhattan and produced demos with Epic Records, Sandy Linzer producing, and with A & M Records, Michael Jackson producing, and recorded with Elton John guitarist Davey Johnstone. He played in Shenandaoh , backing Tom Rush and touring with Arlo Guthrie, and formed the band Galaxy (later named Gulliver) with John Weider of Animals fame. David Carron left behind a cache of beautiful songs ranging from the sublimely spiritual to the seriously rockin’.

There is an article about Clones in an old guitar magazine. If I recall correctly Billy recorded it rather quickly with Jimmy and that Billy had 20 or so friends at the studio who all did the stomping part at the end.

All the covers on TAFH bore me to death, with the exception of Dreaming, which I like way more than the original. Clones is pretty fun for what it is I guess.

Too me the only one they botched was A Night Like This. You're All I've Got Tonight is good, and the rest are fucking awesome.

In my area of Texas they played Destination Unknown quite a bit. At the time I thought it was a really strange selection for SP to have covered.

They put a real spin on Dreaming. I liked all the covers pretty much. A departure anyway, from the rest of the box.
