Default country music

is everywhere at my workplace. I go from one floor to another and everyone is listening to the same radio station. I always hear some song about "sittin' round here watchin' airplanes" or another about a girl learning to ride her first bike or SOMETHING. I'm not a fan so it's really quite irritating.

Anyway, I got to wondering...does anyone here listen to country? What artists do you listen to or what do you like about it, or do you try to steer clear of it like I do?

There's some country that I like but I hate listening to country radio stations.

It's like the same 15 songs over and over and over and over.

I like country like I like rock music. True artists with real things to say and innovative ways to say them is great. Generic and predictable pop music is generally lame and boring.

Artists that I consider Country or countryish that I like:

Bright Eyes
Bob Dylan
Johnny Cash

I'm sure there is good country music out there but all I ever hear is the trite horrible stereotypical redneck shit.

i recognise its influence on rock music

and some countryish music is pretty good. pure country and all that cliche imagery is boring

I would say I listen to more stuff that would fall into the Americana genre than actual country but Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Lucinda Williams and Bonnie Raitt are all worth checking out. I have also heard good things about Allison Krauss, though I have not heard much from her save for the album she did with Robert Plant. The Tom Waits cover she does on there was enough to get me to look into her though.

i've got an older album of hers (allison krauss) that was recommended by ravenguy a while ago. you might really like it too. i think it's called 'lonely runs both ways'

"Roll On (Eighteen Wheeler)"

Roll on highway, roll on along
Roll on daddy till you get back home
Roll on family, roll on crew
Roll on momma like I asked you to do
And roll on eighteen-wheeler roll on (roll on)

Well it's Monday morning, he's kissin' momma goodbye
He's up and gone with the sun
Daddy drives an eighteen-wheeler
And he's off on a midwest run
As three sad faces gather 'round momma
They ask her when daddy's comin' home
Daddy drives an eighteen-wheeler
And they sure miss him when he's gone (yeah they do)

Ah, but he calls them every night and he tells them that he loves them
He taught them this song to sing

Roll on highway, roll on along
Roll on daddy till you get back home
Roll on family, roll on crew
Roll on momma like I asked you to do
And roll on eighteen-wheeler, roll on (roll on)

Well it's Wednesday evening, momma's waitin' by the phone
It rings but it's not his voice
Seems the highway patrol has found a jack-knifed rig
In a snow bank in Illinois

But the driver was missin' and the search had been abandoned
For the weather had everything stalled
And they had checked all the houses and the local motels
When they had some more news they'd call
And she told them when they found him to tell him that she loved him
And she hung up the phone singin'

Roll on highway, roll on along
Roll on daddy till you get back home
Roll on family, roll on crew
Roll on momma like I asked you to do
And roll on eighteen-wheeler roll on

Momma and the children will be waiting up all night long
Thinkin' nothing but the worst is comin'
With the ringin' of the telephone
Oh, but the man upstairs was listening
When momma asked him to bring daddy home
And when the call came in it was daddy on the other end
Askin' her if she had been singin' the song, singin'

Roll on highway, roll on along
Roll on daddy till you get back home
Roll on family, roll on crew
Roll on momma like I asked you to do
And roll on eighteen-wheeler

Roll on highway, roll on along
Roll on daddy till you get back home
Roll on family, roll on crew
Roll on momma like I asked you to do
And roll on eighteen-wheeler, roll on (roll on)

Eighteen-wheeler
Eighteen-wheeler
Eighteen-wheeler
Eighteen-wheeler
Roll on
Roll on
Roll on
Roll on

i have to listen to country radio sometimes at work, too. at times i think i prefer it to the god-awful local classic rock station.
